DEAR PRIME MINISTER,

PRIME MINISTER, WE WANT NEW ZEALAND TO LEAD AT THE UN TREATY NEGOTIATIONS, TO ENABLE THE CREATION OF A NETWORK OF FULLY PROTECTED OCEAN SANCTUARIES AROUND THE WORLD, AND STRENGTHEN CONSERVATION OF THE GLOBAL OCEAN. WE MUST SEIZE THIS ONCE IN A GENERATION OPPORTUNITY.SINCERELY,

In Aotearoa, we are blessed with hundreds of kilometres of breathtaking coastline, and going for a swim, a surf, a dive, or a sail is a way of life for many of us. It’s no wonder New Zealanders love the ocean. But it is so much more than just a playground.

Life's so hectic. We could all do with a breather. So take one breath, then another. Can you smell the ocean? That's where your second breath came from. That's right - half the oxygen we breathe comes from the big blue.

Our very lives depend on a healthy ocean, so do the lives of countless creatures that call it home. The seas are a treasure of biodiversity. We know even less about what lies in its depths than we know about the moon.

The vast global ocean also works as a pump to regulate our climate. A healthy ocean will be crucial in the fight against climate change - our generation’s ‘nuclear free moment’.

But our provider, our protector, the moana is in trouble.

Our oceans have been pushed to the brink by destructive industry. Fossil fuel companies have driven rapid ocean warming, acidification and loss of oxygen, while commercial fishing plunders it for everything it's got, and seabed mining is a new threat that looms large on the horizon.

Prime Minister, together we can turn this around. We can protect the ocean not only for ourselves, but for our children, and for theirs. The science is very clear: in order for the ocean to recover and thrive, we must fully protect 30% of the global oceans in a network of ocean sanctuaries by 2030.

Right now, New Zealand is taking part in negotiating a Global Ocean Treaty at the United Nations, which, if successful, would allow for the creation of ocean sanctuaries that span the world, and dramatically improve ocean protections outside those sanctuaries.

This could be the biggest conservation effort in history. We need New Zealand at the forefront of negotiations, not sitting on the fence, but leading the way.

Aotearoa has often been a leader on the world stage. It’s time to do that once more.
