BOD measurement according to EN 1899-1 and EN 1899-2
and for self-checks
The Biological Oxygen Demand is an important parameter in water resource manage-ment. It is a quantity used for the quality of water and the purification power ofbiological wastewater treatment stages. In addition it is essential in the planningand dimensioning of sewage treatment plants.
In routine use BOD determination is used to check the wastewater in the inflow anddischarge of sewage treatment plants. Depending on the measurement site and typeof wastewater the BOD value can lie between a few mg/l and several thousand mg/l.Several methods are available for carrying out the measurement.
WTW offers various measuring systems for these methods.
In “dilution BOD” the oxygen content of a sample is measured with an oxygen sensorbefore and after an incubation period of 5 days. The difference between the measure-ments is the BOD5 value; this method is officially recognized.
In “BOD self-checks” with the respirometer the reduction in oxygen causes a definitepressure difference which can be measured by a pressure sensor. This method is veryeasy to carry out and is a practical method.
As these two methods are basically very different they only correlate for a few sam-ples which, however, have a practical relevance such as in the discharge channelsof municipal sewage treatment plants. In both cases the samples must be kept at20 °C for 5 days. WTW offers a wide range of suitable thermostatted equipment.

This laboratory oxygen meter has been specially developedfor BODn measurements. A special program allows BODn deter-mination according to EN 1899-1. You can store up to 7 ofyour own routines for frequently occurring dilution ratios. Amaximum of 30 measuring samples each with 18 dilutionsallow the management of up to 540 diluted samples. TheinoLab® BSB/BOD Level 3 can also be used as a conventionalhigh-end oxygen meter.

Despite all discussions about quickeralternative methods, the determinationof the biological oxygen demand BODhas not become any less important. Onthe contrary, it is still one of the mostimportant measurements for the man-agement of water resources and allowsstatements to be made about theloading of waters and wastewater withbiodegradable substances. The impor-tance of the respirometric BOD measure-ment is also shown by the inclusion ofthe “Determination of the biochemicaloxygen demand after n-days (BODn) ina respirometer – extension of themethod according to DIN EN 1899-2(H55)” as a proposal for a Germanstandard method in the 46th installment2000 of the DEV.
Criticisms of the conventional mano-metric measuring systems have mainlyconcerned the use of mercury for mea-suring the pressure. Mercury is toxic andif not handled properly it producesvapors which are injurious to health.
With the development of the OxiTop®

The OxiTop® Control system is the logicalfurther development of the successfulOxiTop® system.

Stirrers for BOD measurement
Stirrers IS 6 and IS 12 have been specially developed for BODmeasurement with the OxiTop® system. With the aid of asoftware-controlled speed alteration system the stirrer alwayscatches the stirrer bar so that it cannot remain stationary norcan it wobble about. The sample is simply placed on a stirrerand the magnetic stirrer bar will start rotating properly in thecenter without any problems.
The speed is selected so that an optimal gas exchange with thesample takes place.
The stirrer is maintenance-free and non-wearing as it containsno moving parts.

BOD5 values must be determined at aconstant temperature of 20 °C. If thisrequirement cannot be realized at theworkplace then a thermostat cabinet inwhich the samples can be placed for theduration of the test is required.
As the samples must be additionallystirred the thermostat cabinets are fittedwith internal sockets to provide thestirrers with electricity.
Depending on the thermostat cabinetsize up to 48 samples can be thermo-statted simultaneously.
Sizes /2 and /4 are available with trans-parent insulating glass doors.
Alternatively all thermostat cabinets canbe provided with a variable temperaturecontroller, range +5 ... +40 °C.
