Activities for teaching staff ACTIVITY 4

Health Benefits

Supervised tooth brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste is an essential part of keeping teeth healthy. Teeth should be brushed in the morning and again last thing at night

Discussing meals can help the children look at achieving a balanced diet.

Learning Outcomes

To have personal independence in personal hygiene (P & SD)

To use appropriate mathematical language related to time (M)

To listen and talk about their experiences ( L&L)

Activity Raise children’s awareness of the daily routines which are essential to good health

Group Size Up to four children

Resources

Scissors, pens, pictures from magazines, glue & paper.

Suggestions for carrying out the activity

Talk to the children about the routines in their day

Let the children look for pictures of daytime routines such as getting up, washing, eating at mealtimes, cleaning teeth etc and cut them out

Glue the pictures on circles of card and create a display board labelling the different routine times and write relevant captions under each one

Discuss with the children why and when they need to carry out the routines such as tooth brushing and discuss what they may eat at their mealtimes

Further Ideas

Use the pictures to create simple books

Dramatise the routines with physical actions.

Adapting the activity for younger children

Play with children involving dolls, puppets etc and pretend to get them to carry out these routines.
