Rob McCall trades in corporate life to open a hot rod shop

Rob’s Rod Shop is a relatively new hotspot of hot rodding activity located in Downingtown, Pa. Although the shop doors opened last January, the business has been around since 2004.

Owner Rob McCall explains, “This shop was an outgrowth of the hobby business I started as a fallback plan for my corporate job, which I was concerned could go away at some point.” While the writing was on the wall for some time before his job finally vanished, McCall found himself at a crossroad.

“I could have gone after another job similar to the one I had, but that wasn’t where I wanted to be,” McCall says. “Cars are my passion, and they always have been.”

In fact, McCall’s information technology career had happened quite by accident. “I was infatuated with cars at an early age,” McCall says. “When I was fifteen I started working in a computer store because cars were becoming computer controlled, and I figured that if I wanted to work on them and modify them I’d better understand how they worked.” That computer store job paid for McCall’s first car, a Chevy Malibu on which he performed all of the usual high school hot rod modifications. In fact, working in the computer field paid for several cars that would follow—and for his college education.

After graduating college, he and his wife Erin were married. “Before I knew it, another 18 years had passed,” McCall says. “What started as a job had snowballed into a career that lasted for 25 years. But it ran its course.”

Although McCall worked for more than two decades in the computer field, he spent most of his off time in the garage, at car shows and swap meets, and rummaging in junkyards. During those years he built his black ’68 Barracuda fastback, a stout street car that boasts modern technology melded with a vintage hot rod flair, and he made considerable progress on several other projects including Erin’s ’73 Dodge Challenger. The couple joined the Delaware Valley Mopar Association in 1995 and for more than 10 years McCall has served as club president.

“Through my involvement with the automotive hobby I’ve met a lot of great people,” McCall says. “It occurred to me that I really missed having a local speed shop—a place to get parts and to hang out with other ‘motor heads’ in the area.” What he envisioned was a store that stocked the staples of hot rodding and could serve as a hub of hot rodding activity for locals, as well as a shop that offered folks personal service on their classic and special interest vehicles.

McCall focuses his shop activities primarily on ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s domestic performance- oriented vehicles. “If it qualifies for a Pennsylvania antique tag, we would probably work on it,” he says. Already he has performed work on a Superformance Cobra replica, a ’71 Corvette, a ’69 Camaro SS, a ’68 Skylark, a ’68 Dart, and a ’65 Coronet, to name a few. On the day I visited he was putting the finishing touches on a ’72 Road Runner clutch while a ’69 Mustang project sat nearby. To better serve his customers he has established alliances with several specialty shops nearby.

He describes the parts end of the business as “a traditional speed shop catering to ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s cars primarily, but we also sell parts for late model performance cars such as Camaros, Mustangs, Challengers, and the rest of the SRT-8 lineup. If the big mail order warehouses

advertise it, we can get it too,” McCall says. “Our prices are very competitive on most products. But coming here you also get personal service and advice from a fellow enthusiast.” In addition, if McCall is unable to help a customer for whatever reason, he can usually refer that person to a specialist who can.

Rob’s Rod Shop is a stocking dealer for Brad Penn oil. “Modern motor oils have greatly reduced levels of zinc and phosphorous so that catalytic converters will last longer,” McCall says. “That’s fine for modern engines with roller cams—but engines with flat lifter camshafts, which includes virtually everything built prior to the mid-eighties, require the extreme pressure protection offered by zinc and phosphorous in order to prevent cam and lifter failure. Brad Penn oils are formulated with these protective additives and provide the level of protection older engines need.” In addition to Brad Penn lubricants, they stock Wix oil filters for popular applications.

I would like to share a thought with you about the car hobby. If you are a regular attendee at a cruise or car show, it’s probably safe to assume that on many occasions you have developed a friendship or association with a fellow cruiser. Many times it starts off with a casual conversation and before you know it, you park your car (and your lawn chair) near each other and enjoy the time talking about just about anything. It extends your family in a car camaraderie way.

The ride you see here belonged to one of our extended family, Don Giacomoni. Don was a car guy’s car guy – a body shop owner who had seen the hobby develop from the beginning stages to what we experience today.

This article is a special tribute to those who knew Don, and all of the people who, like him, have made every car event remind us of how we are like a family that shares a bond we call “friendship.”

Atlantic City Classic Car Show & Auction

Forty years is a long time for a car activity to be around – but 40 years of car auctions and automobile-related vendors is just what the Atlantic City Car Show is celebrating this year.

Vendors, a car corral, and a special collectibles auction were hotspots. More than 1,000 cars went up on the block for perspective buyers to place their bids.

Frostbite CruiseSome events have catchy titles with special meanings attached to them. Others

reflect a cause. But all titles serve one purpose: to let the cruisers have an inkling of what the event represents.

The South Jersey Cruisers Association car group held their 5th annual “Frostbite Cruise” back in November--mild weather had greeted the past four out of five events. This time, Mother Nature decided to give the event’s title a more literal meaning. It was cold and breezy. This did not stop the 200-plus participants from coming out and sharing a cruise that had food, music and camaraderie.

With the sponsorship of Acme Market of Maintree Shopping Center of Vineland, NJ and the SJ Cruisers, this was a cold day that was accentuated by the warmth of the friendships of car enthusiasts.

Delco Cruisers Salute to Our Veterans Show

Our service personnel have always been there to keep the American dream alive and well. Many car clubs make it a point to bring attention to those who have served our country.

One such club is the Delco Cruisers, a Delaware County, Pa., group. This club stages a car show where all of the proceeds go to the five branches of our military.

The “Salute to Our Veterans Show,” now in its fifth year, has grown into a mega-event where more than 500 car and motorcycle enthusiasts come out to salute those who have served.

The Delco Cruisers raised $6,000 to share with members of the military branches. Rose Tree Park located in Media, Pa., was the scenic setting to give recognition to those in the military both active and retired.

Hey gang, I hope your holiday season was

filled with joy and good health. We need all you cruisers out and about real soon. Before you know it, we will have the rides out attending shows and cruises throughout the tri-state area. So get in the shop and change the oil, add some grease, check tire pressures, and start polishing. The season is just around the corner.

Recently, the presidents of several local clubs held another meeting to discuss the 2013 season. I must say that this meeting, attended by ten presidents, was very productive. We discussed our individual events for 2013 and formulated a spreadsheet documenting them for all to see. One might say that it seems redundant to document these events when we already have several publications including our own “Cruising News” that already do that. But we felt that a quick reference sheet is necessary, to show exact dates of local clubs’ events, without searching through 100 other events that may not impact our local area. Our objective is to produce the most vehicles at all club-sponsored events as possible. Naturally you are going to find ten different events on the same day some weeks, also sponsored by clubs in different regions. That’s great for two reasons – first, there are plenty of vehicles around to support the events, and second, locations of events will be far enough apart as to not affect one another.

Our plans are to attend the inter-club meeting in Delaware, sponsored by this publication, to lobby for attendance of club-sponsored events. We have talked about the so called “pop-up” shows until we were blue in the face. The answer is simple: if you are a church group, a private company, a high school, etc., take the time to investigate dates for your event before just throwing a dart at the calendar. You will not only help the attendance at your event, but you will most certainly help other events keep the car counts strong.

Another key note needs to be mentioned and it may upset some, but it needs to be said anyway. All cruisers out there who want to attend shows and cruises should really take note of where your registration fee is going. Established events always, let me say that again – always – have one or several charities where the money collected is donated. You might not always know where your registration goes when attending a so-called “pop-up,” one-time event. Unfortunately, there are people out there who would like nothing more than to run a show, make money from our rides, and put it in their pocket.

This is still America and you do have a choice, so please choose wisely. Some time has passed now, but I know all the cruisers’ hearts go out to

the Sandy victims and the families in Newtown, Connecticut. God bless them all. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby.

It’s all about fun. Don’t ever take the fun out of it.

Carlisle is to area car events what Disney is to family entertainment. Founded in 1974 by friends Bill Miller and Chip Miller, Carlisle Events attracts more than 500,000 people annu-ally. This year the Miller families celebrate their 39th year with perhaps their most ambitious schedule in Carlisle history.

Carlisle expanded from 12 to 17 events in 2012, highlighted by the addition of the Bloomsburg Nationals, the Carlisle Sports and Outdoor Nationals (launching this year) and a pair of shows in Florida — Zephyrhills Fall and Winter AutoFest. In addition to these four events announced in 2012, Carlisle added a partnership with Auctions America in 2011. Total events that involve the Carlisle brand have increased 70% since the start of 2010.

With multiple additions comes an important reduction to the upcoming season in ticket costs and parking fees for select shows. In 2013, Sunday admission will be reduced by half for all specialty shows, joining Spring and Fall Carlisle where half-price Sunday has been in effect. In addition, parking just outside of Gate 5 will be free on Sundays only. This is ap-plicable for all events except Carlisle Bike Fest. Also, for the Carlisle Ford Nationals, Chrysler Nationals and Corvettes at Carlisle shows, Thursday will be branded as an early-bird day and will be marketed as an opportunity for anyone interested in the swap meet, car corral and midway aspects of the weekend to get a jump on their shopping brethren. This feature will cost full price, but there will be no parking fees in Carlisle-owned and operated lots. Finally, in the new pricing structure children age 12 and under will be admitted free. Previously, free admission was granted for children 8 and under.

The popular Spring Carlisle Collector Car Swap Meet & Corral is set for April 24-28. The event plays host to thousands of collector and classic automotive enthusiasts, who travel to the 150-acre Carlisle Fairgrounds from all points of the globe to buy, sell and celebrate all things automotive. The event also hosts a two-day auto auction presented by Auctions America.

Carlisle Performance & Style is set for May 11-12. The event is more than a car show; P&S is a motorsports and lifestyle festival that celebrates the hottest and ever-evolving trends in the motorsports world. The second weekend of May at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds will once again be home to the hottest, loudest, fastest and most tricked-out cars, trucks and SUVs on the East Coast.

The Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals follow on May 17-19. The festival showcases more than 1,400 classic and high-performance vehicles. Seven countries and 37 manufacturers will be represented. In addition, there are 850+ vending spaces filled with collector pieces and parts, literature, memorabilia and merchandise.

The Carlisle Ford Nationals are set for June 7-9. Billed as the largest all-Ford event in

the world, attendees will have a showcase of more than 2,800 vehicles to check out on the National Parts Depot show field.

Carlisle Events Gears Up for Big Show Season

What do you do to thank your parents who have done so much for you while growing up? Well, how about rebuilding them the one special car that they enjoyed many years ago?

Bob Mole did just that. It was the exact car that his parents bought in 1967. This is the car Bob remembers his mom driving him around on his newspaper route as a kid. It’s also the car in which his sister, Sandy, learned to drive.

The car was a Pontiac Tempest Lemans 326. Robert Mole, Bob’s dad, put it into storage more than 20 years ago. Bob got the car out of storage without letting his parents know and with the help of his good friends, Jr. Dawson and Rich Iglesias, the car was totally disassembled.

The real work began as the motor, trans, rear, and both front/rear suspensions were rebuilt and painted like new. The brakes were replaced – disc brakes up front which the car never had before. Also, all new brake lines and a power master cylinder were installed since Mom and Dad said that the Pontiac never came to a stop very well. Next came the addition of new stainless steel 2” exhaust dual pipes. Most of the work was done at Jr. Dawson’s shop (a converted chicken coop.) Working with the car up on jack stands, Jr. completely stripped the underside of the car and then detailed it, including the engine bay.

The finished product: a better car than when it was new. All that was left was the reveal. On a cold Sunday afternoon in February, Bob invited his parents to his house to check out some “home remodeling” he was doing. When they arrived, Bob steered them out to his shop for the shock of their lives. There in the shop I stepped out to meet them. I told them that I was there to do an interview for Cruising Magazine about a guy by the name of Bob Mole who was restoring a car. Wow, what a shock when they turned around and saw the car was their old Pontiac! The surprises did not stop there. Every time they checked something else out on the car, they were amazed at the detail. Bob raised the car up on a lift to have Mom and Pop check out the undercarriage as he continued to point out all the new parts. Now I want you to realize that Bob’s parents are in their 80’s but sharp as ever. While looking at the underside of the car, Bob’s mom, Adele, picked up that he had done something up front to the brakes. By far the neatest thing to me was her reaction when he fired up the engine for them. It was clear to me who the motor head in this family is.

Being a part of this tribute car build was great fun. Boy, I love this job!

There is something about the winter that makes us build up a great anticipation about theupcoming car season. Let’s face it, unless there is a warm winter, most of the time our ridesstay parked. We then pass the time away by looking at television shows like My Classic

Car, Pastime, Chop, Cut, Rebuild, and so forth. These programs, and many more like them,help satisfy our downtime need to keep the fires of our hobby burning ever so brightly in ourcollective minds.Many times, it just takes a different direction until the first warm daysof spring arrive and we can open the doors to the garage and, with a heavenly chorus, singingHallelujah, we jump into the car, turn the ignition key, and slowly back it out and into themild cruisin air for all of the world to see and hear.

Simply stated, the old car hobby that brings us out to shows and cruises seldom turns off for the cold weather season. Many times, it just takes a different direction until the first warm days of Spring arrive and we can open the doors to the garage and, with a heavenly chorus singing “Hallelujah”, …we jump into the car, turn the ignition key, slowly back it out and into the real mild cruisin’ air for all of the world to see and hear. It’s just a divine experience.

I have noticed that an old fashion car concept is starting to take root within our hobby. It’s the nonclub. What this amounts to is a group of friends or people with similar car type interests, getting together to go to car events and share good times. They, many times, have no by-laws or regular meetings nor do they have dues. Some of these non-clubs have a t-shirt to show that they are in a group and that is about where it all ends. The concept is quite simple: just fun and no pressure. I like that!

When you think about how our hobby emerged, it was usually started by a group of guys helping each other out in the garage, forming friendships with like minded buddies and then eventually organizing into planning some public events.

No matter how you look at people who enjoy the various forms of rides and events that make the car hobby, they all share the same high octane blood. This is something that is an all year love affair and even the winter weather does not slow down the passion for cruisin’.

We car guys do have a special bond. Being in each other’s company, talking about cars and working on them is a twelve month a year activity.

Department of Spring: You know spring is here when the Annual Spring Thaw cruises start to pop up. Speaking of Spring Thaw events: see you Sunday, April 7, in Vineland for the local cruising season opener. Department of Staying Power: The Salem County Fairground swap meet is in its 42nd year. Department of Staying Power II: The Atlantic City Car Show is in its 40th year. Department of Fun: The breakfast fun run. Call some friends and travel to a place to share a meal and friendships.

Hi Gang,Well, the winter meetings are over and now it’s time to get out to the

events. Over the winter, other than a lack of the white stuff (of which I’m not complaining) there were some changes:

1. Quite a few clubs had problems and decided to branch off or form “new” clubs or organizations.2. Show, date, time, and rule changes, etc.3. Many of the “old guard” (officers) have stepped down or retired.

I want to mention a big change. The Merchantville, NJ, car show is set for a new date on June 29 and has now become a daytime event -- no more getting home at 10 or 11 p.m. I think it will work great, and will hopefully bring in a lot of new faces!

Also, please note: Cruising Magazine will be published four times throughout the year, from now on.

These updates and changes are some of the reasons that we have winter meetings. Hence the quote: “Don’t know the players without a program” – in this case, better known as Cruising Magazine! I want to thank all of the clubs, organizations and businesses that joined us for our meetings.

Lastly, I’d like to pass on something to those who may not have attended a winter meeting. Common sense is an important factor when planning events. When there are two similar events planned just a couple of miles from one another, why not find out who is putting the other on and talk it through – perhaps compromise another date or merge both events into a super event? This way, it would be a win-win for all involved, instead of having two potentially poorly-attended events the same day. Conversation and a little common sense are two of the cheapest things we’ve got going for us, let’s use them.
