Crocodiles Alligators

Crocodiles are carnivores which means they only eat meat. No brussel sprouts for crocodiles!

Alligators are mainly carnivores but they do sometimes eat berries, citrus fruit and grapes if they grow where they live.

Crocodiles eat mammals, birds, fish and amphibians.

Alligators eat mammals, birds, fish, turtles and amphibians.

• The main difference between crocs and gators is all in their faces!

Crocodiles have a more pointy nose, which is called a snout. It is shaped like a V

Alligators have a rounder snout. It is shaped like a U.

Crocodiles have a very toothy smile! When they close their mouths you can still see their top and bottom teeth.

• When alligators close their mouth you can mainly only see their top teeth.

• Where do they live?

Alligators live in the USA and China.

Crocodiles live in Africa, Asia, Australia, the USA and South America.

• Habitat

• Both crocodiles and alligators are cold blooded so they cannot live anywhere too cold. They like to live in warm tropical places, like swamps and jungles.

Crocodiles can live in freshwater but most live in salt water. They are known as freshwater crocodiles or saltwater crocodiles.

Alligators only live in fresh water.

There is a swampy area in Florida, America called the Everglades. It is the only place in the world where you can find both crocodiles and alligators living together. What sort of water must it be, fresh or salty?

• Use all you have learnt about crocodiles and alligators to make a poster showing what the differences are between them.

• You can draw pictures or print them out and stick them on.

• Make your poster exciting and colourful!
