What are we assuring? Our promise of what the course provides…..
• Learning outcomes
• Standards (e.g. AQF, discipline, etc)

Assurance of Learning (AoL)
• is focussed on COURSES (not units) and providing evidence of the achievement of learning outcomes by our students;
• is an ONGOING process;• involves making our expectations EXPLICIT, setting
criteria and standards;• systematically gathers, analyses and interprets the
EVIDENCE to determine how well performance matches expectations.
CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B
Evidence of AoLEvidence to substantiate AoL should be direct. It is embedded within the course and derived directly for assessment of the learning outcomes.
Indirect measures (such as eValuate, exit / alumni surveys, placement reports, etc.) can only be provided in support of AoL. In themselves they do not provide AoL

Learning – normal business practice
•How will you/ students know if they can do it?
• Has it been effective?
• What can be improved?
• What do the students need to do to learn?
• What should the students be able to do/ know?

AoL findings – examplea) Feedback from one (postgraduate) unit chair - “there is an insufficient
standard of English language proficiency among some of the international students”; this is an anecdote encountered reasonably often.
b) In same trimester, English language was measured for AoL (GLO2 Communication) in 25 separate criteria from units in same/similar course. Criteria included: “written presentation”, “English proficiency”, “executive summary”, “spelling and grammar”.
c) In 21 (of the 25) criteria, at least 85% of students met or exceeded the expected standard (for 14 of these the level was at 95% or above).
d) Questions:(i) were the criteria and/or expected levels at the right standard? (ii) if yes, how do we reconcile the comment in (a) with the results?

Trust me, I’ve been doing it for years…….
But do we know what we don’t
know….?
