Stadium Express is going strong and work is underway to bring retailers in the shopping complex.
“We opened a gas station here because we believe Stadium Drive will be the second Clinton Street,” said Stefano Assaf, owner of Stadium Express and the shopping center, Stadium Plaza. The building is located at 100 Stadium Drive.
Stadium Express offers unleaded gasoline and soon will have diesel pumps as well.
“We don’t play the game (of fl uctuating gas prices). I’m not
going to betray my city like that,” Assaf said, adding that having a station that doesn’t do that helps keep prices somewhat steady. “We haven’t seen the 60-cent increases like before.”
The convenience store is open seven days a week from 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
“It’s a convenience store that has the cheapest beer (at state minimum prices),” Assaf said, adding there is a 50-foot-long beer cave. “We have state minimum prices on cigarettes and excellent coffee. We also offer Meek’s donuts. We try to keep things local.”
While the gas station is going strong, Assaf is working to get
more retailers in the rest of the shopping complex.
The Stadium Express shopping center is 24,000 square feet and has several storefronts.
Assaf said about every day there are people asking about other openings in the Stadium Drive building.
“We’re in talks with Panera (Bread) but they said Defi ance is a secondary market,” he said. “But they did come out and look at the site. ... I’ll never give up on Panera. There’s always a way.”
He said Chipotle said Defi ance wasn’t a good fi t for their market.
“Defi ance isn’t well marketed
for some food ventures,” Assaf said, adding that retail opportunities in the city need to be highlighted as well as industrial ones.
“I speak from the heart, we need to market the city better. The real estate group I hired out of Cleveland (which represents Panera, Marshal’s and other retailers) said that Defi ance is a treasure they just discovered. ... This is a historic town where
people need to eat and sleep, and we need to concentrate on what we have. I’m very proud of Defi ance city.”
Assaf added that he believes more retail businesses will come to the area.
“This shopping center is a good plus for the community,” he said. “We just need to market the city better.”

65 Lost & FoundHomemade eatsGrilled tacos to die forHispanic cuisine is among the most beloved across the globe. Whether you trace your ancestry to Mexico or Spain or
have no familial connection to Hispanic culture, chances are you enjoy some foods that do trace their origins to one of the world’s many Spanish-speaking countries.
Though simple, tacos are a favorite food for many people regardless of their heritage. Those who enjoy this much loved Mexican dish can try their hand at the following recipe for “Grilled Carne Asada Tacos” courtesy of Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).
Grilled Carne Asada Tacos
Grilled Carne Asada Tacos Makes 12 tacos
Marinade3 cloves garlic, minced1/2 cup drained, sliced pickled jalapeno peppers1/2 cup teriyaki sauce1 tablespoon minced red bell pepper1 tablespoon granulated sugar2 teaspoons kosher salt
11/2 pounds beef skirt or minute steak12 6- to 8-inch fl our or corn tortillas2 limes, each cut into 6 wedges Juice of 3 lemons Pico de Gallo (see box)
1. To make the marinade: In a medium bowl, combine lemon juice, garlic, jalapenos, teriyaki sauce, bell pepper, sugar, and salt until sugar and salt have dissolved.
2. In a large resealable plastic bag, add marinade and meat and seal. Work marinade through meat and seal. Work marinade through meat with your fi ngers. Refrigerate meat for at least 2 hours or for up to 6 hours.
3. Preheat greased barbecue grill to medium. Remove meat from marinade, discarding marinade. Grill meat
for 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare. Remove from grill and let stand for 8 to 10 minutes. Carve meat across the grain into thin slices, then cut into bite-size pieces.
4. To build tacos, warm the tortillas on a skillet, heating each tortilla on each side until soft and pliable. Divide meat equally among tortillas and top with Pico de Gallo. Fold tortillas in half. Serve with a sliced lime.
Pico de Gallo Makes 2 cups4 tomatoes, seeded and diced4 green onions, green parts only, minced3 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced2 serrano chile peppers, seeded and minced1 onion, fi nely chopped2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro Juice of 2 limes Kosher salt
In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, green onions, jalapenos, serrano chiles, onion, and cilantro. Add lime juice and mix well. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour or for up to 24 hours. Add salt to taste just before serving.
