Creating Culture: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Work

Welcome

What do you know?

What do you want to know?

What does the media and government want you to know?

How does what is happening on Wet’suwet’en territory and to the people connect to equity, diversity, and inclusion?

Goals & Guidelines

❖ Open up a space for dialogue and exchange.❖ Develop common language and definitions.❖ Share strategies and resources.❖ Build capacity for future action.

❖ Ask more questions. Make less assumptions.❖ Listen to understand and not to respond.❖ No one knows everything but together we know a lot.❖ Progress is a process.

Connect

Talk to a neighbour and share:

1. Your name2. Something people wouldn't know by looking at you

Things to consider:

1. What information do you have/need/want?2. What assumptions might you be making?

Count A Finger

Count a finger if the statement reflects your experience. It is your choice if you want your fingers to be visible or not.

Example: “Count a finger if you studied at Concordia.”

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)

In small groups come up with:

1. A definition of equity, diversity, and inclusion2. An example of equity, diversity, and inclusion

EQUITY

Equity vs. Equality

Equality is about giving everyone the same thing despite differing barriers.Equity is about giving people what they need because of differing barriers.

DIVERSITY

Diverse ≠ Black

Diverse ≠ Trans

Diverse ≠ Poor

Diverse ≠ Disabled

Diverse ≠ Gay

We are looking for diverse candidates.

We are looking to build a diverse team.

INCLUSION

Quotes on Inclusion

“Examine any doorway, window, toilet, chair or desk…and you will find the outline of the body meant to use it.”

- Aimi Hamraie

"If you have to do inclusion after the fact, you probably weren't thinking of people from the beginning."

- Krysta Williams, Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator of The Native Youth Sexual Health Network

-

Remember: Equity, diversity, and, inclusion are (supposed to be) responses to the systems of oppression that cause or contribute to inequity, homogeneity, and exclusion.

Strategies1. Be in relationship.

2. Name and challenge the norms (written vs. hidden or formal vs. informal).

3. If hiring, evaluating, or promoting, question qualifications and criteria.

4. Consult a multi/interfaith calendar and consider religious and spiritual holidays and observances when scheduling.

5. Add/replace your bathrooms so there are non-gendered or gender inclusive spaces. If you have a single user washroom that is gendered ask why?

6. Add/replace checkboxes with lines. Make space.

7. Respect that people have lives outside of work. Work flexibility allows people to be more engaged and productive.

8. Pay equity matters. Pay people fairly, on time, and ideally upfront or in advance!

9. Accessibilize working spaces and normalize accommodations.

10. Create structural accountability processes and reciprocal feedback measures.

11. Commit to ongoing training for those with decision-making power and authority.

12. Commit to collective ongoing learning through discussions, readings, workshops, media etc.
