Cooling SystemsPurpose: to keep the engine at it’s most

efficient operating temperature

TOO HOT! TOO COLD!

- poor lubrication- excessive heat- seizing- poor fuel economy

- poor lubrication- power loss- poor fuel economy

Antifreeze (Ethylene Glycol)Prevents Freezing by lowering the freezing temperature:

- can cause cracking of the block and head- very rapid over heating due to no flow

Prevents Overheating by raising the boiling temperature:- can cause severe engine damage- cylinder head warping- cracking of the block and head

Also contains other chemicals:

- water pump lubricants- corrosion inhibitors- leak agents- foam inhibitors

Cooling System ServiceAntifreeze strength:System Maintenance

-visual inspection - strength testing- PH levels- pressure testing- replace hoses etc 4-5 yrs- replace antifreeze 2-3 yrs

Replace Antifreeze:

-every 2 – 3 years, due to contamination and added chemical determination
