watermelon pickles. Next year’s picnic tables would be graced with jars of these recycled rinds, in tastier form. A thrifty group. In all the years I attended, it never rained, but, should the unthinkable happen, I believe we would have ended up either in the Methodist Church or the Grange Hall, where many of the original participants were members. After dinner and wash-up, the rocking chair brigade would watch from the porch while the rest would either sit on the beach (which was deeper then, below the bulkhead), swim, water-ski, or play lawn games -- baseball, croquet, horseshoes -- if the weather allowed. By late afternoon, the crowd had thinned, and the remaining hardy crew fixed supper. Lillian Dickerson brought her meat grinder from home to grind up the leftover chicken for chicken salad sandwiches, and whatever else was left from dinner was served buffet style. There was always plenty. Betsey DickersonOctober 2003 Rev. November 2009, November 2014

CATCH-A-STAR LITERARY LUNCHEON THURSDAY, JULY 16Memoirist and fiction writer Abigail Thomas will be the guest speaker at the annual Catch-A-Star Literary Luncheon, to be held at noon at the Sound View Restaurant in Greenport. This is the 20th year that Paula Shengold has arranged and chaired the summer luncheon celebrating arts and letters, sponsored by the Daughters of Israel group of Congregation Tifereth Israel synagogue in Greenport. The event typically attracts more than 100 guests from the North and South Forks, Suffolk and Westchester Counties, and Connecticut. Stephen King says Abigail Thomas’s new memoir, What Comes Next and How to Like It, “fills memory with living breath.” He calls her the Emily Dickinson of memoirists, as so much of her book’s wisdom is “between the lines and in the white spaces.” Glowing reviews of the new book, which addresses the joys of her life as well as aspects of growing older, duplicate those of her two previous memoirs, A Three Dog Life and Safekeeping, which focus on experiences during her younger days. Lunch will feature locally grown foods, and guests will have an opportunity to take home great raffle prizes. Advance reservations are suggested. Tickets at $35 each can be reserved by calling the synagogue at 631-477-0232.

LADIES’ GOLF MONDAY, JULY, 20 Join the ELIH Auxiliary for “Ladies’ Day On The Links.” The Southold West Branch of the Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary will hold its second annual Golf Outing on at Island’s End Golf & Country Club, Greenport with a 9 am tee time, a lunch buffet with a cash bar, fun prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Win $15,000 with a hole-in-one, sponsored by Robert’s Jewelers of Southold. Entry fee: $125. Tee sign sponsorships are available at $25. Limited to 72 golfers. Register by July 15th. For more infor call Barbara Koch, 631-477-0975 or Bill Fish, 631-477-0777.

COUTURE & ANTIqUE CLOTHING SALETHURSDAY JULY 23 THROUGH SATURDAY JULY 25

The Collections Committee of the Southold Historical Society sale will be held from 1 to 4pm at the Cosden-Price Gallery in the Reichert Family Center, located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. Some of the items offered will be period and designer coats, dresses, handbags, hats and shoes. The funds raised will be earmarked for preservation of the Civil War Banner which the Society acquired last year. The banner was originally cre-ated for the Mattituck “Wide Awake” Club. The “Wide Awakes” were a paramilitary campaign organization affiliated with the American Republican Party during the United States Presidential election of 1860. Local newspapers report that on the day before the election of 1860, the “Wide Awake” groups of the North Fork marched in a torchlight parade through Southold in support of Abraham Lincoln’s election. The Mattituck Club is mentioned as marching in that parade. While the banner survived mostly intact over the years, it does require preservation work to ensure its long term survival. For more information on this event or other Society programs, please contact the Southold His-torical Society at (631) 765-5500.

JEwS FROM ARAb COUNTRIES IS SpEAkER’S TOpIC FOR TISHA b’Av ObSERvANCE SUNDAY, JULY 26

Joseph Levy, an Egyptian Jew, will be the guest speaker for a Tisha B’Av observance at Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport at 2 p.m., in the community room of the syna-gogue. The public is invited to attend. Following his presentation, the speaker will take questions and refreshments will be offered. Levy’s talk will address the issue of Jewish refugees from Arab countries and how they play a part in the longstanding Arab-Israeli dispute. For more than three decades, the speaker has focused on what he considers “the forgotten people” in the current Jewish-Arab question. In recent years, he has spoken in more than 50 locations in the tri-state area about the marginalized existence of Jews in Arab countries up to present day Jewish life in Egypt. In the Jewish faith, Tisha B’Av (translated from the Hebrew as the 9th day of the month of Av), is an annual fast day, which mourns the destruction of the ancient First and Second Temples in Jerusalem plus other tragedies that, centuries later, have befallen the Jewish people on the 9th of Av. For this reason, scholars attach spiritual meaning to the date. Noteworthy today, the Western Wall that still stands in Jerusalem, where for centuries Jews have gathered to pray, is the retaining wall on the western side of the Temple Mount that survived the destruction in 587 BCE. The program is being arranged by the Cultural Arts Committee of Congregation Tife-reth Israel. For more information, please call committee chairperson Debra Riva at the synagogue at 631-477-0232. Congregation Tifereth Israel has been designated a National Historic Site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

‘THEN & NOw: pAINTINGS OF SOUTHOLD’ ExHIbITION OpENS JULY 11 The Southold Historical Society exhibition of period and contemporary paintings will open to the public on Saturday, July 11 in the Mayne Gallery in the Ann Currie-Bell House, located at 55200 Main Road, Southold. The exhibit – which is being held in honor of the 375th Anniversary of Southold Town – features historic paintings of the North Fork juxtaposed by contemporary works that depict similar or identical scenes. This comparison highlights the changing landscapes and cityscapes over the decades. In some cases the older paintings span as far back as 100 years, making the differences between them and the modern works even more striking. It is also inspiring having the works of renowned artists of the past side by side with present-day artists. The historic paintings are by artists who lived all over the North Fork and include notable locals such as Caroline M. Bell of Mattituck; Marguerite Hawkins of Cutchogue; Edwin Prellwitz of Peconic; Thomas Currie-Bell and Joseph B. Hartranft of Southold, and William Steeple Davis of Orient. Some lesser known artists who came to the area during the summers are also included, such as Mabel Spencer Peterson, who lived in Floral Park in Nassau County. Among the contemporary artists who are participating are Diane Alec-Smith, one of more well-known art teachers on the North Fork; Adelaide Amend, who is known for her land and seascapes, including the Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild in Cutchogue; Wen-dy Prellwitz, scion of the noted Prellwitz family of artists from Peconic; Jada Rowland of Greenport, who is known for her very fine portraits; and Ann McCaughey of Cutchogue, who has recently been involved in the Cloud 9 artists group. While the older works are part of the permanent collection of the Society and not for sale, the contemporary works will be for sale with 25% of the proceeds benefiting the Historical Society. The exhibit will be on display through October 11, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1-4pm. For more info call (631) 765-5500 or visit www.southold-historicalsociety.org.

bOOk TALk & SIGNING SATURDAY, AUGUST 8Author Jacqueline Dinan will discuss her new book, In Search of Barnabas Horton: From English Baker to Long Island Proprietor 1600-1680, 1:00–3:00 p.m. at the South-old Free Library, 53705 Main Road, Southold (631–765–2077, www.southoldlibrary.org). She will lead a conversation about Southold’s first 50 years as a frontier community. Meet the “real” Barnabas Horton as the author traces his life and times through church records, legal documents, and social histories. Learn how Reverend John Youngs’s dream to establish a model Puritan theocracy became mired by frontier realities of death, social rivals, and independent-minded merchants. Genealogy questions? If you’ve been curi-ous about your connections to Southold’s founding families, Jeff Horton and Dan Whar-ton, experts from the Horton Surname Project at FTDNA.com, will be on hand before and after the book talk to answer questions and share their expertise in early Southold family lines. SEEkING FAMILIES... TO GIvE CHILDREN A FRESH AIR ExpERIENCESummer is upon us and you still have the chance to make it memorable for a New York City child! Each summer, nearly 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. By volunteering as a host family in the East End, you can help give a child a break from the heat and noise of the crowded city streets while enjoying your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experience this summer. “The simple campfires that we had in our backyards in the evenings turned into special moments when our Fresh Air child’s face lit up with curiosity and enthusiasm as we made s’mores and hotdogs,” said a Fresh Air host mom. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communi-ties since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Grand Opening of the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store, Riverhead, 1964 (Image from the Sigal Collection of the SCHS Library Archives [172.33.1G]. Copyright © Suffolk County Historical Society. All rights reserved.)

In 1872, Aaron Montgomery Ward, a traveling dry goods salesman, started selling to farmers by mail order via a one-page catalog list. By inventing the mail-order catalog, Ward could keep

prices low through bypassing the small-town shopkeepers and itinerant salesmen. In 1875, Ward pioneered another practice now taken for granted: “Satisfaction Guaranteed or Your Money Back!” Montgomery Ward’s Catalog Store opened in 1964 in Riverhead at 127 East Main Street to a huge crowd of local shoppers. The two-story Sigal Building was built in 1938 by Al Sigal, a Riv-erhead developer who kept his offices on the second floor. None of the original façade, which was sheathed in green and black carrara glass panels separated by chrome strips, remains intact. On the east side there was a drive through to a back parking area. The entrance hall was lined with red marble from the French luxury liner Normandie, which burned in New York Harbor in 1942. The building once housed “House of Music” and then Montgomery Ward and other stores. Today the building is home to Vines & Hops.
