What is the HLTA programme?

• A national programme leading to HLTA status • 33 HLTA standards – closely linked to QTS• Preparation provided by Leeds Trinity University

College• Assessment is provided by the Regional

Provider

‘Overall, gaining HLTA status was really motivating. Although it was challenging, it highlighted the important jobs I was already doing in school and the significant role I have’ (HLTA Candidate).

HLTA Status

• HLTA status is awarded to the person not the school

• Entitles you to apply for HLTA posts• Gains you 20 Higher Education credits at

Level 4 (first year of degree programme)

What are the criteria for being accepted onto the programme?Applicants must:• Possess English and Mathematics GCSE A-C

or Level 2 Adult Literacy and Numeracy or an equivalent (original certificates will be required)

• Be employed in a school or setting• Be regularly involved in working with a whole

class, groups and individual pupils• Have the support of their headteacher• Have access to ICT and the ability to use it

How is the course structured?

• Three full days over a 2 month period• Support of a tutor• Time to work on written tasks• Assessment

Applicants complete a training needs analysis

What would I have to do?

• Complete some short pieces of writing about your day to day work to demonstrate the standards

• Provide a portfolio of documentary evidence to support the standards

• Attend all three days

How would I be assessed?

• An assessor reads your pieces of writing• The assessor visits your school for 3 hours to:

– Interview you– Interview teacher(s)– Interview the head teacher or

representative• The assessor looks at the documentary evidence• No observation is involved

How much does it cost?

• Funding is no longer provided through the local authority

• £289 for the three day course• £540 for the assessment• Possibly some additional costs for the venue

When will it take place? • Hopefully in the Summer term

Where will it take place?• Venue to be decided• Could be in Kirklees or at Leeds Trinity

Foundation Degree

• Two year degree programme• Half day release from work setting (term

time only) to attend lectures at Leeds Trinity

• Six modules per year• Each module has an assignment• Full access to student facilities on campus• Includes an optional HLTA module
