sports and enrichment 3
Most university admissions staff believe that involvement in extra curricular activities and enrichment programmes plays an increasing role in their decision making, when students compete with similarly qualified students for a course.
This could mean anything from participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, playing in an orchestra, representing the College in a sport, to volunteering in the local community.
At Peter Symonds we try to offer the broadest range of activities where you will have the opportunity to:
Participate in different enrichment activities throughout the year.
Learn new skills.
Be involved and connect with college life.
Meet new friends.
Explore new ideas.
welcome to the Sports and Enrichment Activities Programme
sports team trialsIf you are a skilled and dedicated sports performer, the College operates a range of representative teams. Team trials are held for all these teams and dates are published a year in advance. These trials are held before the start of the Autumn term and are the only opportunity you will have to be considered for a team.
Freshers’ fairOur Enrichment and Activities programme starts even before you join the College. On Welcome Days in June we hold the Freshers’ Fair in the Mercers Sports Hall. This is a great opportunity to find out about the range of enrichment activities we offer, speak to students who are promoting their activities and find out how you can become involved.
At Symonds we have a truly amazing range of opportunities outside the classroom, with over 150 different activities on offer to ensure you’ll find something you enjoy and the opportunity to meet new people to enjoy doing it with. Travel, perform and develop through sport, exercise, music or volunteering; improve your wellbeing, learn new skills or explore current hobbies – your options are endless. Seize the opportunity, get involved, get active, and connect with other students and college life.
With competition for university places, apprenticeships and good jobs being as strong as ever, we place great importance on developing you outside the classroom as well as within. We strive to put you in the strongest position whether you are applying to universities, apprenticeships or career based employment.

selection criteria The selection criteria for most of our sports teams is very high, with the majority of our team members playing at club and possibly county level. If in a ‘ranked’ sport, the team coach may well include this as part of the selection process. However some of our teams are keen to introduce more players to their sport, further details of these squads are available at Open Evenings and on the Sports Teams’ Facebook page: ‘Peter Symonds College Sports Teams’. If you have any queries please email the Sports Teams Co-ordinator: sam.jones@psc.ac.uk
team costsSports team representatives pay an annual subscription fee, which includes PSC Kit. The costs of participating vary dependent upon the sport. Annual costs will be confirmed upon selection.
team trialsSelection for our representive teams is by sports team trials only. Dates of trials are published a year in advance and are available at Open Evenings, on the College website and Sports Teams’ Facebook page and on Twitter @PSC_SportsTeams Team Trials are the only chance you have to apply for a team place. Therefore, please do not
book holidays for these dates. If you have any queries please email the Sports Teams Co-ordinator: sam.jones@psc.ac.uk
You may trial for more than one sport if the Team Trials schedule allows. However, if selected for more than one team, you will have to decide which college team you wish to represent.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’s AWARDS: SILVER AND GOLD Are you ready for a challenge that will stretch your mental and physical capabilities? Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards are a fantastic personal development opportunity and look amazing on your UCAS application or CV. We run the Silver and Gold Awards in conjunction with Hampshire DofE. One session per week in college, plus training days and weekends and a final
expedition of four to six days.
Both of the DofE Awards require a very high level of personal
commitment. Before enrolling you should carefully consider
the following: Are you organised and committed enough to balance the high demands of the DofE Award alongside the high requirements of A level academic
study?
EMERGENCY FIRST AID QUALIFICATIONOne session per week for a term. A basic first aid course covering incident management, legislation and recognising injuries and illnesses. You will also learn practical skills including CPR, recovery position, primary and secondary survey and bandaging. An excellent qualification for your CV and UCAS application.
Level 1 Award in Working with Children One session per week. This qualification aims to enable you to develop basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children, aged from birth to 5 years based in a variety of settings. It also helps you understand your role in supporting children’s development. The qualification allows you to develop the basic skills needed to support play-work, out-of-school and early years settings.
Topics covered:
Encouraging children to eat healthily.
Creating a safe environment for young children.
Working in a team.
Providing a range of appropriate play activities for young children.
A portfolio of evidence will be gathered by the learner and internally assessed.
LAMDA SPEAKING IN PUBLICOne session per week, LAMDA is a level 3 accredited exam. The Speaking in Public pathway is an excellent opportunity to increase your chances at interviews and develop confidence in communication skills. The exam consists of preparing two contrasting speeches with topics of your own choice that can be linked to any area of study or a personal passion. This course attracts UCAS points.
SPORTS LEADERS AWARD: LEVEL 3 Two sessions per week. This is a highly practical course that builds leadership skills through sport – working with children, the community and participants with disabilities. Included within the course are First Aid, Safeguarding and various National Governing Bodies (NGB) leadership qualifications. You will be required to volunteer with a range of agencies, such as Active Nation, Active Ability and District Sports, Winchester. This course attracts UCAS points and opens doors both within higher education and the leisure industry.
MUSIC THEORY: GRADE 5One session per week. Grade 5 Theory from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, covering the study of musical notation and all the basic key and chord structures. Aimed at students who want to take an instrumental exam beyond Grade 5, who need a Grade 5 Theory certificate as an entry requirement, and for any music students who have yet to take their Grade 5 Theory exam.
Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) Leaders’ Programme You may be interested in taking PPE at university or want more in-depth discussion on the subjects, or you may have plans to teach or study youth education. The PPE activity group will be great for developing analytical, communication and presentation skills and offers the possibility of linking with an Extended Project in the second year. There is a varied programme of debates, talks and trips chosen by you, and a peer education project to take these subjects out to local feeder schools. After an initial introduction, the project will be led by the group choosing which topics to cover and who to invite. You will also be supported to develop skills in leading workshops that engage younger students.
NCS AMBASSADORS PROGRAMME Had an amazing Summer 2020 on NCS? Want to continue your NCS journey and come away again? Then this is the programme for you! The Peter Symonds NCS Ambassadors is available for students who have completed NCS. Meetings occur twice a month and will include a variety of workshops, fundraising planning sessions, guest speakers, and volunteering. This programme will run within your college timetable and does not require you to commit hours outside of your typical college day. After completing the programme, a range of opportunities will be opened up to you, including going away again as a volunteer leader!
Additional Qualificationsand Nationally Recognised Courses/Awards
You can express your interest in enrolling on these courses when completing the online application process, at Freshers’ Fair on Welcome Day, during Academic Enrolment in August, via the Activities Facebook page or by emailing the Activities Team on activities@psc.ac.uk. INNOVATORS IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION FPTThe course is reserved for only the most competent Further Maths students. It is taken as an extra module with the purpose of seeing some different higher level maths aside from the usual syllabus. It also looks exceptionally good on a UCAS application.
There are three topics studied:
Investigations of curves: Exploring curves with a graph plotter and Computer Algebra system (CAS). The curves can be expressed as cartesian equations, parametric equations and polar curves.
Differential equations: Exploring tangent fields with a graph plotter, analytical solutions with CAS and numerical solutions with a spreadsheet.
Number theory: Writing programs to solve problems in the integers.
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC PRACTITIONER: LEVEL 3 One double session per week. This practical course develops rehearsal and performance skills for competent contemporary instrumentalists/vocalists with a strong interest in Jazz or popular music styles. There are performance opportunities and a public final showcase. This course attracts UCAS points. Auditions will take place on Friday 30 August 9.00–12.00 in the Recital Room.
Level 2 and level 3 Certificates in Supporting Teaching and Learning These courses require attendance for one session per week. Designed to provide you with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments, the Level 2 course includes practical work experience within a school environment.
They are aimed at learners whose career aim is to support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges. The Level 2 course needs no previous experience.
The Level 3 course requires you to have the Level 2 Certificate, or have had extensive work experience within an educational setting. The award further explores the development of the learner, safeguarding, supporting bilingual learners and children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Sport at Symonds has given me a great focus outside of my studies, as well as a good opportunity to make friends and improve as a player. My sport, hockey, has been very successful during my time here, winning the national cup two years in a row and having the opportunity to prove ourselves against many other schools as part of the England Hockey Cup. This has been a great experience for me both on a personal level and as part of a team, something exceptional from Symonds as a College.

The sporting opportunities at Peter Symonds have really allowed me to progress and enjoy playing for the Netball team. With high level regular match opportunities you can appreciate the level of commitment the sports and activities department have for all the teams at Peter Symonds. It has been a privilege to captain the Netball 1st Team for the 18/19 season, with a great group of girls that I play with here. I have been able to make new friends and play with people I wouldn’t get the chance to without netball being offered at Symonds. The college really cares about developing each sports person as an athlete and a student.Sports Team
