ISO 17025 – How to Accredit yourLaboratory: Practical Aspects of Gain-ing Accreditation (Intensive Course:12–14 November 2002)Accreditation is the formal recognitionthat a testing laboratory is competent tocarry out specific tests and working to in-ternational standards. It is difficult to ob-tain detailed know-how of accreditationon an informal basis: consultants areearning a living from their expertise andindustry tends to be protective of theiraccredited advantage. Accreditation isalso becoming an essential requirementfor research projects sponsored by indus-try and government ministries. Editors ofscientific journals have started discus-sions on how the validity of data submit-ted in research papers might be assessed.Preparing for accreditation is a time-con-suming process and a pro-active ap-proach is advisable.

The Analytical Laboratory, The Uni-versity of Reading, UK, is a UKAS ac-credited testing laboratory No. 2073. Ac-creditation of a multi-function laboratoryis rare, but not impossible. Our Analyti-cal Laboratory represents a unique facili-ty to teach ISO 17025 implementation asit is involved in systematic analysis,teaching and research.The Course: This course will give de-tailed information and hands-on experi-ence of practical issues of quality controland accreditation. Staff will fully sharetheir experiences and provide:1. practical examples on how to establish

quality assurance and control proce-dures

2. how to prepare for UKAS accredita-tion to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard

3. examples of our documents (qualitymanual, sample registration, instru-ment checks, SOPs, method valida-tions, control charts, audits, test re-ports, training records, etc.)

4. practicals to teach day-to-day activi-ties of an accredited laboratory (meet-ing customer requirements, writingSOPs, conducting vertical and hori-zontal audits).

Participants: The course is aimed at an-alysts working in universities, researchinstitutes and industry. The course will beespecially suitable for analysts in agricul-tural, biological, environmental or foodlaboratories – but would not exclude oth-er disciplines, as the principles can be ap-plied to all testing laboratories.

This course will also be relevant forPhD students, who often enter careersand have responsibilities that includemany more aspects than were covered intheir PhD training, e.g. being in charge oflaboratories as part of managerial respon-sibilities. Fees: The tuition fee (£750) covers allcourse-related costs, but not living ortravel costs. Focus on“a CC- label for medical laboratoryservices” and “Autoverification”Antwerp, Belgium, March 17–18, 2003The successful series of “Quality in theSpotlight” conferences held in Antwerpand dealing with the quality in medicallaboratories focuses this time on a CC–label for medical laboratory services.The idea of such a label is a logical ex-tension of the drive for quality, accredi-tation and transparency within thisfield. However it raises the question ofthe definition of the reliability of thetest result. Can this question be an-swered through the assignment of anuncertainty budget; or should the medi-cal applicability be used in reference toa test result? Also in autoverficationprocedures it is important to knowwhich approach holds to provide aproper framework for automation.
