Quackey’s Questions
VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer needed development for his trike-riding, time-traveling duck show.
Vischer wanted Timbuktoons to visual develop and produce the show open and first two episodes for his new preschool show concept, Quacky’s Questions. Quacky is a little duck with big questions and a great imagination. Using his time traveling tricycle, Quacky bumps into key historical figures to get his answers.
We had six weeks for development and production of the first short and five weeks for the second. For production, we used Flash for symbol based and full animation, and After Effects for compositing and effects.
Challenge•Develop the style and art
direction for the show•Produce the title sequence
and two 5 minute shorts•Visually test how a cute
little blue animated duckling could ride a trike, time travel, blow bubbles and communicate.
Solution•Used a mix of symbol and
frame by frame animation•Used a combination of
Flash and After Effects

SuperSCO “how-to” Webisodes
Department of Veteran Affairs
SuperSCO “how-to” WebisodesChanges in the Post 9/11 GI Bill, a law that provides educational benefits to veterans, made new training for School Certifying Officials (SCOs) necessary.
Under the changes, veterans received expanded benefits and the ability to enroll in a wider variety of vocational training. SCOs, the representatives at schools responsible for certifying eligible veteran students, needed more information about the changes and how that would affect the processing of the benefit.
Timbuktoons co-developed a series concept of fun animated “how-to” videos to encourage, inspire and train SCOs on new reporting procedures for helping former military in their educational endeavors.
Challenge•Explain complex and
technical concepts•Encourage the use of the
100 page SCO Handbook•Create engaging and fun
videos that make the facts more memorable
Solution•Combined limited
animation with motion graphics to save costs and explain changes easier
•Employed a superhero theme to show SCOs as the frontline support for veteran students
•Used tongue-in-cheek humor to explain technical concepts in a fun way

Triple T Team
Catholic Stewardship Consultants wanted to entertain and educate children about stewardship as a way of life. CSC’s consulting services help parishes encourage stewardship in their communities. Timbuktoons was asked to develop a show concept that would encourage those virtues in children too since giving back your time, talent and treasure is not an “adults only” message.
Stewart Ship is a bored tween that questions the purpose of just about everything. That is, until he receives a mysterious gift that opens his eyes to making a difference in the world by sharing his God-given time, talent, and treasure.
Challenge•Develop the concept as an
IP versus a one-off short•Produce the pilot episode
in a small period of time•Create characters that
personify the three elements of stewardship: Time, Talent and Treasure
•Engage children with an entertaining story while communicating required client messaging
Solution•Developed a backstory and
personality for each of the characters
•Produced multiple episodes each focusing on one character and component of stewardship
•Used a “hero and his robots” theme to unpack key messaging for children

Orbie: Pilot Episode
Orbie for Orphans wanted to use animation to show orphans and foster children that they are special.
Orbie for Orphans wanted a pilot episode for their animated curriculum in development that’s designed for the specific needs of orphans worldwide. Timbuktoons worked with Orbie for Orphans to develop the series (story, character design, art direction) and produce the short.
In production we used three pipelines for the different styled animated segments. The majority of the episode is frame by frame animation created digitally in Toon Boom’s Harmony. Another segment (“Orbie’s Story”) was produced in After Effects using illustrator assets. The third segment (“Bo’s Flashback”) was symbol based animation produced in Flash.
Challenge•Adapt existing CG
characters to 2D animation•Produce almost 10 minutes
within a short timeframe•Switch to a new pipeline for
frame by frame animation using Harmony
•Craft a creative storyline while including specific required content
Solution•Implement three different
pipelines for three different art directions
•Crew up for various pre-production and production elements
