March 2016
Greetings!
It was March Madness this month at the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs. Just like the teams whoparticipate in the annual NCAA tournament, my office embraced many challenges head on with laser-likefocus and determination!
This month I had the pleasure to join Mayor Bowser at the 2016 State of District Address where AnamerCastrello, originally from Puerto Rico, performed the U.S. National Anthem. During her address, MayorBowser stated "In a city as prosperous as ours, we can level the playing field and we can make sure ourresidents are paid a good wage. When the Council returns from its break, I will send down legislation toincrease our minimum wage to $15 by 2020" Please join Mayor Bowser to help raise the wage for workingmen and women! EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
We continue to invest in things that help the economic growth for Latino businesses in the District. Imoderated a panel in Spanish during this year's Build It In DC General & Home Improvement ContractorForum hosted by Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. My team and I participated at theSeventh Annual Business Expo hosted by the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.Venues like this allow DC businesses to connect and start a pathway to the middle class. We alsokicked-off our first round table session in collaboration with the Department of Small and LocalBusinesses Development. Business owners learned the benefits of having a small local business, how tohave access to capital and how to become a vendor for DC government. Stay tuned for our next session!I believe our Latino businesses deserve a fair shot. We partner with several organizations like the D.C.Bar Pro Bono Center as well as other government agencies so that we can help Latino businessesprosper in the District. This month, because of our partnership with D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, we were able to offer a small business advice clinic wherebusiness owners could meet one-on-one with a lawyer.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND HEALTH
National Women's History Month Celebration
This month was National Women's History Month and the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs celebrated andhonored all Latina women who have had a positive impact on the District. We had a fantastic event onemorning where women from all eight wards came to learn about success, personal care, and work-familybalance. Latina women are the back bone of our families. We must take care of ourselves first so that wecan take care of our families. Strong families help build a strong community and district. Special thanks toDr. Claudia Campos, Univision's Silvana Quiroz, and El Zol's Pedro Biaggi and Omayra Martinez for yourpartnership and collaboration during the event.
Our version of March Madness included the training of over 106 people on the Hands on Hearts CPRprogram. My team continues to work closely with the community to make sure they have access tohealth related initiatives, news, and programs. Please join us next month to receive training and help savea life! At the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs we want to create opportunities where our youth areengaged, active, and constantly learning. Continuing our March Madness, we hosted our first session oftennis in partnership with the Junior Tennis Champions Center. Our youth had the opportunity to learnhow to play tennis and stay fit.
