COMMUNICATION

Communication about communication. When texting a friend, do you ever type “ jk” for “just

kidding” after saying something you don’t mean? If you do, you are commenting on your communication – standing back from it and explaining the communication itself to your friend. You are using metacommunication.

METACOMMUNICATION

One who communicates a message.

SENDER

The idea the sender is trying to communicate to the receiver.

MESSAGE

One for whom a message is intended

RECEIVER

Communication when two things simultaneously affect one another, both acting and reacting at the same time.

COMMUNICATION TRANSACTION

The process of turning ideas into messages. (sender)

ENCODING

The process of translating communication into meaning. (receiver)

DECODING

The receiver’s response to the sender.

FEEDBACK

Time and place (like setting).

Where the communication is taking place.

CONTEXT

The means used to transmit a message from sender to receiver. Verbal, Nonverbal, Phone Call, School

Announcement, Billboard Advertisements, Daily News Broadcasts, Text Messages, Social Media, etc.

CHANNEL

Anything that blocks or distorts communication. Also referred to as “noise.” Can be external or internal

INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Communication in which people exchange messages. (2 or more people)

Communication with 2 people is called dyadic communication.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Small Group Communication involves interpersonal communication among three or more people who view themselves as a group and who are working toward a shared purpose or goal.

Small groups have a common purpose that unites the individuals and gives them a sense of group identity.

SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION

Organizational Communication can simplistically be defined as communication that occurs in organizations.

An organization is a group of interdependent individuals brought together in a hierarchical structure to perform a variety of structured tasks toward the accomplishment of some goal.

ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Communication in which a speaker addresses a group as one receiver. (Most Public Speaking)

PERSON-TO-GROUP COMMUNICATION

Using technology to bring a message to many people.

Mass Media Communication has the same purpose as “person-to-group” communication – to entertain, inform, and persuade.

MASS MEDIA

Entertainment: Soap Operas, Sit Coms, Dramatic Series, etc.

Information: Newscasts, News Magazines, etc.

Persuasion: Advertising, commercials, Public Service Announcements, and “infomercials”
