with his own patent of 1778)

John Shanks 1825-1895 (Rose from a journeyman plumber to establish a sanitaryware

manufacturing business in 1875)

Rev. Henry Moule 1801-1880 (Patented an earth closet in 1860)

Sir Henry Doulton 1820-1897 (Founder of the famous Lambeth pottery, his success being built on

the wide scale manufacture of salt-glazed sewer pipes)

Thomas Crapper 1835-1910 (His strength was as an entrepreneur who raised the expectations of

both manufacturers and the public)

Frederick Humpherson 1854-1919 (Apprenticed to Thomas Crapper, founded his own company in 1876)
