Jimmy Carter says that he is losing his religion
Former President of the United State, Jimmy Carter is losing his religion, and he is leaving the Southern Baptist Convention, of which he has been a member for the past six decades, serving as a deacon and Bible class teacher on Sundays.
According to an article (“Losing my religion for equality”), that he wrote on TheAge.com.au, an Australian web site, he said that after the convention’s leaders, quoted, “a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be ‘subservient’ to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors or chaplains in the military service.”
He must know that he referenced a biblical passage, meaning something that the Holy Spirit wanted included in Scripture. Here is that passage, “And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression” (1 Timothy 2.12–14).
The question comes down to whether President Carter believes that the Holy Spirit moved the writers of Scripture, such as Paul when he wrote
First Timothy, or whether they just wrote their own opinion.
Does believing the words of Paul lead to discrimination against women? No, although some make try to interpret it that way, but I have never heard of such use of that passage or any other. Yet, The Bible does show male leadership in the church.
Jesus certainly could have chosen six women and six men as His apostles, but He did not. He decided to have twelve men. Why? I do not know, but I do trust Him to run His church the way He desires!
I have never been privileged to hear President Carter teach a Bible class, but now I think that he does not know how to interpret and teach biblical material.
Hopefully someday he will learn to see the Scriptures and the church for
the way the Lord wants them understood.
The Holy Spirit did move Paul to write that God created Adam first, and Eve sinned first. Paul merely repeated what you find in Genesis 1–3, and we do well to accept the Spirit’s account of creation and of the first sin.
Otherwise, how can we face the Creator on the Day of Judgment? DR

Control Your Tongue When you are being critical: “With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the simil-itude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and curs-ing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so” (James 3.9–10).
Trials vs Blessings “We are too prone to engrave our trials in marble and write our blessings in sand.” –Charles Spur-geon
A President Is Only as Good as Our Prayers
“The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21.1).
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, interces-sions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and rever-ence” (1 Timothy 2.1–2).
How to Identify Me by Thomas Merton “If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I am living for, in detail, and ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully for the thing I want to live for.”
Church History 1965: Death in London, England, of Eleanor Farjeon. She authored the popular hymn “Morning Has
Broken.” Some of us are familiar with the song through the record-ing of Cat Stevens. 1865: Sabine Baring-Gould wrote the song, “Onward Christian Sol-diers,” as a marching song for some children he must keep to-gether as they walk between two villages during a festival. 1535: John Fisher is beheaded by command of King Henry VIII of England because he has openly rebuked Henry’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon and refused to accept Henry as head of the Church of England. John Fisher sounds like John the Baptist who also lost his head for rebuking the marriage of Herod. 304: (Traditional date—the event may have taken place as early as 209.) Alban becomes the first Christian known to have been martyred in the British Isles. He had been a pagan.
