We exam ine ana ly t ica l ly the ex is tence and s tab il ity of phase- locked s ta tes in a weak ly he te rogeneo us neurona l ne tw ork .
W e consider a model of N neurons w i th a ll - to-a ll synapt ic coupl ing w here the he te rogene i ty i s in the in tr insic f i ring f requency
of the indiv idua l neurons. W e consider both inhib i tory and exc i ta tory coupl ing . We der ive the condi t ions un der wh ich s tab le
phase - locking is possib le . In hom ogen eous ne tworks, man y d i f fe rent per iodic phase- lock ed s ta tes a re possib le. The i r s tab il ity
depends on the dynam ics of the neuron and the coupl ing . For weak he te rogene i ty , the phase- locked s ta tes a re per turbed
from the hom ogen eous s ta tes and can rem ain s tab le i f the ir homo gene ous counte rpar ts a re s tab le. For enoug h he te rogene i ty ,
phase- lock ed so lu t ions e i ther lose s tab il ity or a re dest royed comp le te ly . We an a lyze the possib le s ta tes the ne twork can take
when p hase- lock ing is broken. 1998 Elsevie r Sc ience B.V.
