The nucleus of an atom is composed of protons (all positive) and neutrons (neutral).
Since like charges repel one another, why doesn't the nucleus fly apart?
There is a stronger force, the strong force, which holds them together.
Both protons and neutrons have the strong force.

Isotopes can also be shown using nuclear symbols.
mass number 1 2 3 12 14atomic number 1 1 1 6 6HHH CC
The term "nuclide" is sometimes used to represent an isotope of an element.
Isotopes of an element behave the same chemically they differ only in their masses.

The amu is based on the mass of carbon12.
One amu is equal to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon12.
Most elements occur as more than one isotope.
This means that a sample of an element is actually a mixture of several different isotopes.
The average atomic mass is the weighted average of all of the isotopes of an element (it is the one listed on the periodic table).

Nuclear radiation occurs when an unstable atom tries to become more stable by emitting energy.
This energy is in the form of particles or electromagnetic radiation.
1) Alpha
2) Beta
3) Neutron
