Scientific Method

Date:

Chemistry

• Definition: is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes.

• Rewrite this definition in terms that an elementary student would understand.

Scientific Method• Write the 6 steps of the scientific method

1. State the problem• What will you be investigating?

2. Gather information• What research is necessary to investigate

problem?

3. Hypothesis• A tentative explanation of some regularity of

nature.

4. Experiment• Completing the investigation.

5. Record and Analyze Data• Collecting the data to prove a point!

6. Conclusions• What does all the data mean?

Beyond the Scientific Method

• A theory is a TESTED explanation of basic natural phenomena.

• A Scientific law is a theory proven correct and there are no exceptions.

Scientific Method in motion

• Watch this short clip of Jack, Jack Attack

• Look for the use of the scientific method.

Observations (data)Could be :

• qualitative – describe color, odor, shape, etc…

• quantitative – measured data: temperature, pressure, volume, mass, length

• Which is better?

Variables

May be:

• independent – controlled variable (time, temperature) (X-axis)

• dependent – changes depending on independent variable (Y-axis)

• Need a control – a standard to compare the data to.

Laboratory Equipment

• We will be using lots of equipment this trimester.

• Please roam through the colored posters to discover what is stored in each section. Be prepared to share your findings!
