Chat and instant messaging
Group 3
Historical context
• A lot of people used AOL (American Online), prodigy and CompuServe.
• As the internet became a lot more popular so web designers made chat rooms because the technology improved.
• In
• 1997 AOL created ICQ. “The ICQ model is the basis for most instant-messaging utilities on the market today. In the next section we'll examine how these services work”.(http://communication.howstuffworks.com/instant-messaging1.htm )
Target audience
• The target audience is usually aimed at teenagers mostly because they like to chat with their friends quickly. But everyone is able to use instant messaging if they have the internet. Both sexes are able to use instant messaging. I think that the age range is from 10-30

Instant messaging uses a programme communicating with others by connecting you to a server used by everyone who uses the same program.
Once you choose someone to talk to your instant messaging program sends any messages you choose directly to the IP (internet protocol) address and port of the person you want to talk to. This is how conversations happen quickly and ‘instantly’, as you aren't sending a message to a server and back to another
computer. Two computers are directly connected to each other at that point, and can send messages to each other as quickly as they choose.
How does it work?
•Messages sent in real time – instant response
•Proper conversation without making a large bill
•Files can be sent via IM (instant messaging)
•Similar to face-to-face conversation
•Safer than chat rooms because you add the people you want
•Free to use
•Quick to set up
•Can monitor who you talk to (Accept/Reject and Blocking)
•Talk to lots of people at once
•Talk to people all over the world – keep in contact with friends who have moved.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_disadvantages_of_instant_messaging
Something that could be improved about instant messaging is that strange people or even perverts can add you and if it is a young child using the software they will not know how to delete the contact so to improve instant messaging it should be easier to delete contacts.
Another improvement of messaging could be stop viruses being sent to people as this can have negative effects on your computer and even stop them from working
How could it be improved?
Non internet alternatives
• Letters• Phone calls• SMS• Sticky Notes• Verbal communication• Sign language• Semaphore• Morse code• Yodelling (not used often)• Smoke signals (used back in the day)
