Changing the guard in county

New Carver County Attorney Mark Metz was sworn in Tuesday by Judge James Morrow. Michael Wentzell was also named as chief deputy of the Attorney’s Offi ce.

a new county attorney took over and the gavel was turned over to a new chairman Tues-day during the Carver County Board’s annual organizational meeting.
Sherif f Jim Olson and County Attorney Mark Metz were given oaths of offi ce on the second work day of the new year. Olson takes over for retiring Sheriff Bud Olson (no relation) and Metz succeeds Jim Keeler, who he defeated in the fall election.
Metz also had his choice for chief deputy approved by the County Board. Michael Wentzell, a 10-year prosecutor in the County Attorney’s Of-fi ce, assumes the role of chief deputy. The County Board unanimously approved a sal-ary of $107,000 for Wentzell.
The selection of chief dep-uty for the Sheriff ’s Office wasn’t ready for approval for the County Board. Olson said he expects to issue that an-nouncement shortly.

Maluchnik, of Chaska, was unanimously elected to take over duties as chairman for the coming year. He takes the gavel from Commissioner Jim Ische, from Norwood. His-torically, commissioners have routinely alternated who leads the board.
Commissioner Tim Lynch, of Watertown, was elected to serve as vice chair.
The first meeting of the year is used for routine orga-nizational matters, including setting regular meeting times, which will generally be on the fi rst, second and fourth Tues-days of the month at 9:15 a.m. Work sessions are typically the third Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m.
The board also established liaison positions with vari-ous agencies and selected the Chaska Herald to serve as the county’s offi cial newspaper for
legal notices.The board spent a short
time debating a motion made by Commissioner Tom Work-man, of Chanhassen, regard-ing the board’s practice of not videotaping the public participation portion of the agenda.
Workman said that the pub-lic comment segment should be taped. However, the county has made it a practice in recent years not to televise that por-tion. County Administrator David Hemze said one reason the county hasn’t videotaped the segment is that some com-
ments can catch county offi -cials “on their heels.”
Lynch said his understand-ing was the public comments portion wasn’t videotaped be-cause of liability concerns.
Commissioners are allowed to request that a concern be placed on another part of the agenda so that a comment from a resident would be on the videotape.
Workman’s motion died for lack of a second.

Michael LaudonMichael “Mick” Laudon, 57, of Belle
Plaine, formerly of Rochester, diedMonday, Jan. 3, 2011, as the result ofinjuries sustained in a motor vehicle acci-dent.
The funeral for Michael will be at 10:30a.m., Friday Jan. 7, 2011 at St. Pius XCatholic Church in Rochester, with Father Paul Nelson offi-ciating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday Jan. 6 atMacken Funeral Home and one hour prior to services atthe church.
Michael was born July 17, 1953 in Rochester, to Milanand Cecilia Eickhoff Laudon. He graduated from JohnMarshall High School in Rochester. After graduation hemoved to Minneapolis where he trained at the MinneapolisTechnical College in jewelry manufacturing and repair.After working in the jewelry industry for 10 years heswitched careers and spent the last 20 years working at theFresh Start Bakery in Chaska, where he was employed atthe time of his death.
Survivors include his father, Milan Laudon of Rochester,brothers, Dale (Kim) Laudon of Ham Lake MN, Dennis(Laura) Laudon of Rochester, Steve Laudon of WautomaWI; four nieces and four nephews. His mother, Cecilia andstepmother, Mary preceded him in death.
Michael was a hardworking devote Catholic who enjoyedhis time with family.
Memorials are preferred to the St Pius X Catholic Churchbuilding fund.
