Change the Story
“You are Part of A Divine Conspiracy!”
“This was a game changer!” said one attender after Ali spoke at Thanksgiving’s
worship services on January 14 and 15. Ali shared his journey of growing up in
Tehran, Iran in a devout Muslim family. Under persecution, his family immigrated to
the United States. With his family needing shelter and nowhere to go on the 4th of
July, he and his twin sister, older brother, and parents were taken in by complete
strangers who saw their need. The motivation for this Christ-following family to take
them in was to love and serve as Jesus loved and served. Twenty-six years later, Ali
gave his heart to Jesus. At all four worship services, we had the privilege of hearing
how God has been transforming his life.
“You are part of a divine conspiracy,” Ali told the people of Thanksgiving. He began to recount his move from New
York to Omaha after the stock market meltdown. “I was a proud Iranian, proud Muslim, proud New Yorker, and
somehow I ended up as a stock broker in Omaha, Nebraska.” As he recounted his story, he could see a divine
conspiracy by our Heavenly Father to adopt him as a child of God. First, there was Thomas in the lunch room at his
place of employment who allowed space for him to sit at his lunch table. Thomas befriended Ali and shared Jesus
by loving and serving him. Next, it was Dan, another executive at the brokerage firm, who was tasked with training
Ali for his next promotion. Dan invited Ali to a Bible study at his church. Ali shared with us that he came each week as
an angry young man because he felt like the God he was hearing about was much different than the god that he
had been taught. He began to hear about grace and relationship with God which touched his heart. There were
several more key people that God put in Ali’s path. Finally, one Friday evening, he stayed at home for a night of
Netflix. On the top of the welcome screen, it said, “suggestions for Ali, The Gospel of John.” Ali watched with great
interest and wept as he realized the God of history, our Heavenly Father, was issuing an invitation to him to become
a child of God. He received the invitation and became a Son of the Most High.
As Ali reflected back on the Lord’s divine conspiracy to seek and save the lost, he remembered when it all began.
He stated, “On the night of the 4th of July this Christian family could have preached a thousand sermons, but nothing
was more impactful than being taken in and served by this family.” As his father recounted the story to Ali, he said,
“Ali, they were not just our friends, but they were our family.”
Ali reminded us again that we all have a part to play in the Father’s divine conspiracy. He exhorted us to reach out
to all people with the Father’s love. He reminded us that throughout the scriptures God has a special place in His
heart for the foreigner, the stranger, the sojourner, and the alien in the land. He shared that these individuals and
families are currently coming in record numbers. He closed with this challenge: “Perhaps this is part of the Father’s
divine conspiracy. They are coming because we never went. Will you receive them?”
We believe this year is a game changer for us! God’s desire is for Thanksgiving! to “get out of the seats and into the
streets,” by being available to help God change the story for others. You too are invited to be part of The Divine
Conspiracy that all may know the Father’s love.
Can you believe it? We are in the second month of the New Year already and there is
still time to pick up another devotional book for the year as there are many from which
to choose sitting on the shelves.
This month I will continue featuring Spiritual Growth books. Just look at the selection
below that can be found on the cart as well as others in the library!
The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel: “A seasoned journalist chases down the biggest story in history.”
LORD, I’ve Got a Problem by Don Baker: “Don Baker blends pastoral wisdom and prosaic style to
confront today’s painful problems head on with God’s hope filled solutions.”
A Love Worth Giving by Max Lucado: “God loves you. Personally. Powerfully. Passionately. Others
have promised and failed. But God has promised and succeeded. He loves you with an unfailing
love. And His love - if you let it - can fill you and leave you with a love worth giving.”
The Family Friendly Church by Ben Freudenburg with Rick Lawrence.: “You want families in your
church to know Jesus. To glorify God in their neighborhoods. To raise faithful children. So help them
get the job done by becoming a family friendly church.”
God’s Joyful Surprise..Finding Yourself Loved by Sue Monk Kidd: “This book is about the adventures of
opening up to one of God’s surprises, the most joyful one of all - His love.”
Breath - Creating Space for God in a Hectic Life by Keri Wyatt Kent: ”Kerri wants to show you what
Jesus meant by ‘Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.’ “

book casts the vision of the heart of God for church as community and spoke to my deepest personal
longings.”
The Work of His Hands by Ken Gire: “Ken Gire invites us to look closely at the work of master sculptor,
Michelangelo, as a way of more fully appreciating how the ultimate Master Sculptor, God Himself,
carefully creates and repairs the work of His hands - you and me.”
Spirit Controlled Living by Clark Cothern: “Get a trip on emotions and impulses. Find spiritual serenity.”
I would like to thank all of you who have found and returned library books, DVD’s and CD’s. I ask that you please continue to look
as we still have a number of items missing. Enjoy your free library and remember when you are finished with them please return
them.

First Grade Milestone: First Graders and their families are invited to attend the First Grade Milestone focused on learning
and living out The Lord’s Prayer. Jesus taught us this prayer as a model for talking to God. He wants us to understand that
prayer is intended to be an opportunity for His people to build and maintain an ongoing relationship with Him. We will focus
on learning this prayer and encouraging our First Graders to more fully participate in the church service by joining with the
congregation in reciting the words that Jesus taught us to pray. We will also break down this prayer to understand the
basics of it, what it means, and how we can use it in our own prayer lives.
The class is held February 26, 2017 from 11:00am-12:30pm in the lower level gathering room. The students will be invited up
in the worship service for a short presentation on the weekend of March 4 & 5. To register please go to the Faith Milestone

T!LC Congregation Council Report Carol Umberger - Council President
Carol.Umberger@thanksgiving.church
Council Report
Occasionally I am asked why we
need to hire an outside expert to
do a CAT survey or to mentor the
church council. It is a valid
question so I want to try to
answer it. But I’m going to ask a
question of my own first. How
many of you grew up
worshipping in a church the size of T!LC?
Interesting statistics regarding congregation size:
• 59% of US worshippers attend services averaging 7-
99 people
• 35% of US worshippers attend services averaging 100
-499
• 4% of US worshippers attend services averaging 500-
999
• 2% of US worshippers attend services averaging 1000
-1999
• .4% of US worshippers attend services averaging
2000-9999
• .01% of US worshippers attend services averaging
10000 plus
The median church has 75 worshippers on a Sunday.
Only 4% of worshippers in the U.S. attend a church our
size. Which means most of the council, staff and
congregation is familiar with the dynamics and
organization of a much smaller congregation. In terms
of management and communication, processes and
procedures are much different in a successful large
church than in a smaller one.
Why does size matter? Generally speaking, as a church
grows, so does the complexity. The congregation is
more diverse and requires more staff to meet its needs.
There must also be a shift to more lay ministry and fewer
decision makers. The larger the church, the more
systematic and redundant the communication needs to
be. More planning and organization has to go into
events. And the larger the church, the more important
are the leadership skills of vision-casting and strategic
design rather than only administration.
This is all great information and there are all kinds of
books to be read on the subject of church size and its
affect on congregations. But taking that knowledge
and putting it into practice is a challenge, especially
when most of the leadership has little experience in a
church this size, either as a worshipper or in a leadership
position. That is why we bring in consultants with specific
knowledge and training skills to mentor and provide
guidance to our church leadership. Council is currently
working with Execheo to help us develop vision clarity
and implementation strategies. We have two teams
(one made up of the church council and one of three
council members and four lay persons) working on WIN
initiatives—What’s Important Now. At the end of this nine
to twelve month process we will have two strategic
plans that will further the vision and mission of T!LC. In
this, we are on the cutting edge of large churches who
are realizing that old ways of thinking and operating are
holding us back from fulfilling all that God wants us to do
in our community, nation, and world.
That’s it for this month. Since I’m on both of the initiative
teams, I am spending a lot of time in meetings and not
much time writing! But I am always willing to answer
questions and if I don’t know the answer, I will get it for
you.
Blessings.
