Convention & Tourist Bureau hosts annual meeting
Marmon Valley Farm was the setting for the 2013 Convention & Tourist
Bureau Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, April 16th. Nicole Cotterman
Daniels, CT Director, welcomed the group to the farm and explained they
moved the meeting to spring this year, kicking off the 2013 tourism season
and recapping the tourism season for 2012. New and expanded programs
and events, a new look and a new name were the theme of the meeting.
The Logan County Fitness Challenge has been expanded to include two
races this year. The Caverns & Castles 5 and Dime on June 8th and the
Oldest Street Race on Labor Day, September 2nd. Last year the Bureau
hosted the Oldest Street Race on Labor Day and it was a great success.
With 225 runners, the program raised $8680 and $2250 was returned to
non-profit organizations throughout Logan County and the region.
Daniels also spoke about the Ramblin’ Road Trip partnership between Logan, Union and Champaign counties. Through
this partnership the three bureaus were able to attend the AAA Great Vacations Expo in Columbus in January and the
Heartland Travel Showcase in February where they met with 39 bus tour companies and discussed possible group tours to
the tri-county region.
Guest Speaker Melinda Huntley, Executive Director of Ohio Travel Association, talked about the economic impact of
tourism in Ohio and keeping up with the trends in how families and travelers look up information about your attractions.
In her presentation she stated more than 443,000 Ohio jobs are sustained by visitors and 8.7% of salaried employees are in
the tourism industry in Ohio. Tourism also generates $2.7 billion in state and local taxes which goes towards fire, police
and sheriff departments and government programs. She challenged attractions to work together and keep up with all the
changes in how guests are researching, booking, participating, and talking about their travel experiences. More and more
travelers are using their smart phones and tablets to research and book travel. She asked the local attractions if they are
mobile friendly and considering those trends in their future marketing plans. Attractions must always consider the traveler
buying cycle: seeking ideas, researching, booking, visiting and experiencing, and remembering. Attractions need to include
each of these areas in marketing plans.
During the meeting the annual Max Evans Tourism Award was presented to Frank Giannola from the Ohio State Parks
Department. This award is given annually to recognize a person in the community who has had a positive impact on and
contributed to tourism throughout Logan County.

Clark State partnership enters its second phase
The joint venture between Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and Clark State Community College has entered its second phase.
School board members recently approved the next step in the two-year plan, which rolls Hi-Point adult education programs
over to Clark State.
The Clark State Community College-Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Workforce Development Collaborative was formally
announced in May 2012. Clark State has been renting a portion of Hi-Point’s classroom space and technology since
August.
With this transition, five courses will no longer be offered through Hi-Point and 10 adult education staff members’ con-
tracts will not be renewed. These discontinued courses include the health information technology, practical nursing, renew-
able energy, supply chain management, and HVAC programs.
Hi-Point’s Adult Education division and Clark State continue to work together through course and personnel changes.
Popular programs such as practical nursing and HVAC courses are likely to resume under the Clark State umbrella.
Six Hundred Downtown assistant manager sets world record
Assistant Manager, Brittany Rowe, recently set a world record spreading out pizza dough during a recent competition.
The seasoned pizza competitor used her every day technique and training to slap out five 12-ounce dough palls to cover
five 12-inch pizza screens in just 33.94 seconds, in the Fastest Dough competition at the World Pizza Games in Las Vegas.
Her time easily beat the previous record of 41.24 seconds set in 2007.
Rowe has 10 years experience working with Michael Shepherd, the owner of Six Hundred Downtown and Michael Angelo’s
Pizza in Rushsylvania.
The World Pizza Games is an international pizza competition held in conjunction with the International Pizza Expo, the
world’s largest pizza show, held each year in Las Vegas, NV. Competitors compete in categories such as the Largest Dough
Stretch, Fastest Dough, Pizza Triathlon, Fastest Pizza Box Folding, and Freestyle Acrobatics.
