for this coming week
Growing through the
Sunday Scriptures
April 19, 2015
Third Sunday of Easter
Acts of the Apostles 3:13-15, 17-19
Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9
1 John: 2: 1-5
Luke 24:35-48
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke:
The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the
way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the
breaking of bread.
While they were still speaking about this, he stood in
their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But
they were startled and terrified and thought that they were
seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you
troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh
and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he
showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still
incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them,
“Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece
of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.
He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to
you while I was still with you, that everything written
about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and
psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to
understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it
is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the
dead on the third day and that repentance, for the
forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all
the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses
of these things.”
Focus Questions:
1. The Gospel today begins with the line about the disciples
recognizing Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Describe a time
when you felt the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist in a deep
way.
2. Describe a time when you were startled by God.
3.Touch is in important part of what Jesus did during his life-
time. After the Resurrection Jesus invited his disciples to touch
him. When have you been touched by Jesus? When have you
touched Jesus?
Family and children’s question:
Jesus wanted his followers to spread the Good News of God’s
love. How do you let others know that God loves them?

FR. ANTONY’S LETTER
Dear Friends,
Teenager to Millionaire: “What is the first secret of
your success?”
Millionaire: “Hard Work”
Teenager: “What’s the second one?”
When we don’t focus on the first and the most important,
we will try to seek success by secondary options, only to
get disappointed and frustrated with life.
The Readings of the Second week of Easter invite us
to focus on the first and important facet– FAITH. The
story of doubting Thomas tells us how Jesus turns
Thomas from external proof to internal faith. Proofs will
only take us as far as to whether or not the other person
fits our expectations about him/her. Only faith in the
person will allow us to experience who he/she that person
is.
The Apostle Thomas relied on the mark of nails in
Jesus’s hands as proof to confirm the Jesus he knew.
But when Jesus appeared to him, he invited Thomas to
have a personal experience of him by believing in him.
Faith is the first and important thing to experience the
worth of the other person. No other thing but faith will
prove the other person’s worth. Human beings are
persons of love and relationships and not objects to be
proved and evaluated by our convenient standards, like
money, power, authority, popularity or glamour. The
story of doubting Thomas promises that “Blessed are
those who have not seen and have believed.”
First Holy Communion of our young men and women
will be celebrated on Saturday, April 25th and on May 2nd
at the 5:00pm Mass, and on Sunday, April 26th and May
3rd at the 12:15pm Mass. We appreciate everyone’s
understanding if their usual seat is not available at those
Masses.
Please mark your calendar for the volunteer
appreciation party on Friday May 1st at 6:30 pm. It is a
dinner and dance evening for all our volunteers. The
dinner is free; but please ensure your place by a deposit
of a check for $20 which will be returned to you when
you show up for the dinner. Since our volunteers number
over 325 and our banquet hall has only limited space, I
am obliged to limit the invitation to volunteers only.
Please understand. Welcome to all volunteers for the
appreciation party.

PARISH OUTREACH
More Easter Thoughts!!!!!
We proclaimed a general “thank you” last time
to those who had donated for Easter…but now
it’s time to get specific! To begin with, we must thank,
Page 3
Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Divine Mercy)
April 12, 2015
once again, the Prunty family, who donated twenty (20)
hams to the cause ( hooray!!!); Dolores Schroeder’s
Religion class who made up twelve (12) Easter baskets
(hooray!!!), Evelyn Mentock who donated Easter baskets
on behalf of the St. Thomas More Columbiettes (hooray!!!)
and also Maria Torquata’s 6th grade class who donated
$47.56 of their hard-earned money to Outreach (hooray!!!).
On a more pragmatic level, all those singles out there who
may be divorced, widowed or uncommitted and who are
over 45 – 60+, are invited to the St. Patrick’s Singles
Fellowship that meets once a month on the third Sunday,
from 10:00 – 11:30. You may expect to meet and greet, eat,
and plan events. You may also meet people who will
become your friends! Meetings are held in the building
behind the Church in Smithtown. Call 631-265-2668 for
details.
St Vincent de Paul Conference
What we do: The St Thomas More SVdP Conference
helps relieve some of the burden put on Outreach. When
the demand on Outreach goes beyond food and daily
necessities, Outreach calls us. We contact the neighbor in
need and arrange to meet with them in their home. We help
by paying bills, networking, finding jobs & temporary
housing, providing clothes and necessary furniture.
What we have been doing: We have been busy assisting
our neighbors who are behind in their rent; helping with car
insurance payments so people could continue to work;
providing furniture and clothing vouchers, and heating
assistance for others. Yes, we have ben busy and helpful
because of your generosity. Please check our Lenten
Project bulletin board in the narthex.
What you can do: Support the conference. All of your
donations are used to help those in our community … your
donations stay right here!
Although we have a close relationship with Outreach and
we work hand in hand, our funds are separate from
Outreach and require your support.
Donations can be made as follows:
Checks: SVdP St. Thomas More Conference
Cash: an envelope that says SVdP. Leave at the rectory.
Become a Vincentian. The only requirement is to have a
desire to help. Together, as a conference, we offer the many
skills and resources that enable to assist those in our
community.
For more information, please call 234-3249. You can also
contact the Parish SVdP Conference by emailing them at
SVdPSTM@aol.com and you can follow them by liking
them on FACEBOOK at “SVdP Conference of
St. Thomas More”.

NEW WEBSITE—ST. THOMAS MORE
Did you know that St. Thomas More has a
website? We've had one in various forms since 1996,
but we have found that many parishioners don't
always make use of it. Recently the STM Pastoral
Council has been discussing social media and the
Internet at length. Like most communities, we have a
growing population of persons who use several types
of electronic media to stay in touch with information
Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Divine Mercy)
April 12, 2015
and keep their lives organized. In order to more
effectively communicate parish information, we will
be making more use of Facebook and Twitter. We
have also re-launched our website with a brand new
design.
We even have a much easier to remember web
address now: stmli.org (that stands for "St. Thomas
More, Long Island").
The website can be viewed not only on your
computer, but on a smartphone or tablet as well. You
will be able to link to our parish Facebook page and
get connected to the Facebook and Twitter accounts
of our Religious Education program and our Youth
Program.
We will have contributed articles and postings from
several areas of the parish, including some of our
ministries, and will have a calendar of events covering
both regular events as well as the special ones that
take place during seasons such as Lent and
Advent. There will be several other features added to
site in the coming weeks. For now, make sure you
check out the new site by going to stmli.org and
bookmark it for future use.

"You will know the truth and the truth will
make you free" (John 8:32)
Religious Freedom Restoration Act
(RFRA): Fact vs. Fiction
This past week, journalist abuse has exploded into
controversy over an innocuous religious freedom law
in Indiana. The federal RFRA was signed into law by
Pres. Clinton in 1993 and 20 states have substantially
the same law. (the federalist.com, 3/30/15)
Don't be fooled. The RFRA does NOT legalize
discrimination. Anyone that says that is misinformed
or worse. RFRA merely allows business owners to
refuse to perform their services if doing so is a
violation of their faith. (catholic vote.org, 4/2/15)
Under the various RFRAs, a state or the federal
government may not substantially burden an
individual's exercise of religion unless the burden is in
furtherance of a compelling government interest and
is the least restrictive means of furthering that
interest. If the government's interest is not important
enough - literally compelling - it cannot outweigh an
individual's right to practice his religion as he sees fit.
RFRA is a shield, not a sword. It can be used to
defend oneself against lawsuits or administrative
action. It can't be used to try and deprive others of the
protections of law. Despite there being no evidence for
discrimination under this law, journalists will simply
repeat this fiction as if it were true, and hope that
incurious, unsuspecting people will assume it. (the
federalist.com,3/30/15)
"The Gospel of Jesus Christ is for people who want to be
free, "free" in the truest sense. And its message is meant
for all of us - unless we choose to be afraid." Archbishop
Charles Chaput
