Catalyst1. Set up your Cornell notes by:

a) Putting the heading (Metric Conversions) at the top left

b) Gluing the notes on the right side.

2. Answer the catalyst questions on your notes

ObjectivesSWBAT:

•Articulate six different prefixes scientists use with standard units.

•Convert between various units through practice.

Metric System Basics

• The three prefixes that we will use the most are:– kilo– centi– milli

Metric System Basics• If you needed to measure length

you would choose meter as your base unit– Length of a tree branch

• 1.5 meters

– Length of a room • 5 meters

– Length of a ball of twine stretched out• 25 meters

Metric System Converting• But what if you need to measure a

longer distance, like from your house to school?– Let’s say you live approximately 10

miles from school• 10 miles = 16093 meters

– 16093 is a big number, but what if you could add a prefix onto the base unit to make it easier to manage:• 16093 meters = 16.093 kilometers

• These prefixes are based on powers of 10. What does this mean?– From each prefix every “step” is either:

• 10 times larger or

• 10 times smaller

– For example• Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters• 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters

Metric System Converting

– Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters so it takes more millimeters for the same length

1 centimeter = 10 millimetersExample not to scale

Metric System Converting

• An easy way to move within the metric system is by moving the decimal point one place for each “step” desired

Example: change meters to centimeters

Base UnitsmetergramLiter

second

deci centi milli

1.00 meter = 100. centimeters

Metric System Converting

• If you move to the left in the diagram, move the decimal to the left

• If you move to the right in the diagram, move the decimal to the right

Metric System Converting

•Now let’s try our previous example from meters to kilometers:16093 meters = _________km

• So for every “step” from the base unit to kilo, we move the decimal 1 place in that direction

Metric System Converting

–How many steps are there from meters to kilometers?

Kilo hecto deca

Base UnitsmetergramLiter

second

deci centi milli

3 steps!

Metric System Converting

– In which direction are we moving?

Metric System Converting

16093 meters = _________km

–We are moving 3 steps to the left

decimal to start with?

Metric System Converting

16093 meters = _________km

• Now let’s start from centigrams and convert to kilograms

Summary/Questions

Take 4 minutes to write your summary for today and then questions and

headings on the left side of the notes.

Questions to answer in your summary:1.How are the prefixes setup?

2.How do you convert between units?
