Lesson Title: Libraries Aren’t Just for Students
Subject Area: All
AASL Library Standard: 1.1.6
Type of Experience: Students will receive information on all types of libraries, both public and specialized. Law libraries, medical libraries, genealogical libraries, music libraries, public libraries, and the Library of Congress are among some of the libraries featured. Online subscription databases and trade databases will also be discussed The emphasis is on matching appropriate information tools to the needs of the user.

Type of Experience: The rules of our library are explained and rationalized. A real-life connection is made, in that our library uses the same code of conduct as the Enoch Pratt Free Library and many other public and university libraries.

Type of Experience: Students will engage with various online library catalogs—REACH Partnership School, Enoch Pratt Free Library, and the Library of Congress. Various types of searches—keyword, author, subject, and title—will be conducted. The two major classification systems—Dewey and Library of Congress will be explained.

Type of Experience: Students will be introduced to the resources on the Pratt Library site. Emphasis will be on career and job-related databases. Students will be shown advanced search strategies. Students will extract ready-made citations and analyze lexile reading levels.

Lesson Title: Reference and Online Health Resources

Type of Experience: Students will be introduced to reference books on health, as well as reliable online government health resources, both here and abroad. Students will choose one health issue, use the resources to research the issue, and create a tri-fold brochure to educate peers about the topic.

Type of Experience: Students will practice basic log in and organizational protocols for Office 365. Folders will be set up for a personal electronic portfolio. Documents will be created and sent electronically to teachers.

Type of Experience: Using library books and the online Occupational Outlook Handbook, students will create a Power Point presentation about one career’s characteristics, as well as the training needed to enter that career.

Lesson Title: The Roaring Twenties

Type of Experience: Students will analyze the leadership of Harding, Wilson, Coolidge, and Hoover to discover how the politics and culture of the times led to economic disaster, social upheaval, and even the roots of the Vietnam war. Literature and music of the time will be analyzed to determine how the common man processed this tumultuous time in history.

Lesson Title: Shipbreaking

Type of Experience: The historical practice of shipbreaking will be explored. Shipbreaking is the process of dismantling an obsolete vessel's structure for scrapping or disposal. Conducted at a pier, drydock or dismantling slip, it includes a wide range of activities, from removing all gear and equipment to cutting down and recycling the ship's infrastructure.

Lesson Title: The Internment of “Aliens” in the United States

Type of Experience: Students will use primary and secondary resources to determine the prejudices toward and treatment of persons of Japanese, German, and Italian descent during World War II. Attention will be specifically directed toward the language of prejudice and the living conditions of captives. Local internment camps will be of special interest.
