What counts as MSW in South Carolina?

• Combined residential, commercial, institutional/non-profit and industrial packaging generated.

• This does not include industrial process waste and by-products from manufacturing, C&D debris, automobile bodies, agricultural waste, combustion ash, mining waste and sewage sludge.

• The state’s MSW recycling rate improved to 29.5 percent in FY12 from 27.7 percent the previous FY.

• Overall, the amount of MSW recycled increased more than 56,000 tons (4.5 percent) to 1,229,100 tons.

Electronics• Ban became effective at beginning

5,726 tons in FY11 to 9,258 tons in FY12 – about a 62 percent increase.

Used Motor Oil Recycling

• More than 900 used oil collection centers.

• 932,725 gallons (3,265 tons) collected in FY12.

• Since 1990, more than 18.3 million gallons recycled by DIYers.

Commingled Collection

• In FY12, 81,810 tons of commingled material was recycled–72 percent increase from previous fiscal year.

• This accounts for 6.7 percent of all MSW recycled.
