Why describe?

1. To add interest to your writing

2. Offer variety to the reader

3. Help the reader create a picture,or see a picture, from your writing

Press these to look at examples.

Adds interest, hmmm…The dog was barking.

Where is the interest?

Wouldn’t you like to know more?

Whose dog?

What kind of bark?

Add some adjectives and look at the difference.

Jenny’s giant bull dog was barking viciously!

Variety is the spice of life.

The brown tree was tall. In the forest there were manybrown trees. Most of the trees were tall.

Good information but man am I bored!

Add a few adjectives, and descriptive words, let us see the different trees!

The rusty brown tree was taller than a house. The hugeforest was filled with trees; Maples, Oaks, even a fewBirch trees. All of the trees were at least forty feet tall.

Show, don’t tell!

The room was destroyed by the fire.

Use adjectives and descriptive words to build a picturefor your readers; give them details!

Do the words above describe the picture that appears when you click the dragon?

Create this image with your words!

Here are my words for the fire.

The large room was filled with scorched debris. All thewindows were smashed, and the charred window sillsmatched the blackened walls. Nothing was spared by thedestructive heat. Everything, big and small, valuable andworthless, all of it was destroyed.

All of the yellow words are descriptive words - adjectivesand adverbs.

Now for some practice!

sentences for each picture. The next slide is a quick review. After that choose the picture you
