PROJECT DEMONSTRATES SEVERAL CLASSICAL ADVANTAGES OF HELICAL PILES
SPEED: Total foundation install time was 4 days. Day 1: Survey in pile loca-
tions and install batter boards. Day 2: Hydro excavate to look for under-
ground obstructions. Day 3: Install helical piles. Day 4: Poured concrete to
fill in hydro excavated holes.
UNINTRUSIVE: Small equipment and crew were able to stay out of truck
lanes. No excavation for foundations. No need to reroute existing lines or
conduit. No soil spoils requiring disposal.
Unaffected by weather: Hydro-excavation occurred during heavy rains.
Helical piles installed the next day in wet conditions.
Immediate load bearing capability: Canopy base plates were attached di-
rectly to the pile cap.
Cost Savings: Helical piles not only met the schedule and access require-
ments; they were much cheaper than spread footers.
CANOPY
Customer needed a new can-
opy over an existing truck
unloading rack. Operation
needed to continue as unin-
terrupted as possible. Above
picture taken four weeks
after project was started.
Includes paving and installa-
tion of lights. Truck unload-
ing was never stopped or di-
verted.
SPREAD FOOTER OPTION
Spread footers were estimat-
ed to take at least 3 1/2
weeks to install. Truck lanes
would have to be closed
while footers were dug,
formed, poured, and allowed
to cure.

FAST INSTALLATION
Piles need small cross sectional area so could
be installed close to existing underground lines
without the need to reroute.
HIGH CAPACITY IN A SMALL FOOT PRINT
Trucks were able to unload in all lanes during
pile installation.
ADVANTAGES OVER SPREAD FOOTERS
Fast installation with small crew and equip-
ment requirements made helical piles the
quickest and most economical choice.
Faster installation with smaller crew and
equipment. No excavation spoils to handle or
dispose. No need for wreck forms and back
fill. Immediately loadable. More economical.
Hydro-excavation was performed to 5’ deep.
This assured no underground pipelines or con-
duit were in the way of the piles. The deep
narrow holes left after pile installation were
back filled with concrete. This assured that no
voids were left and increased lateral load ca-
pacity.
Pile caps can be imbedded in concrete. Or can
be used in a welded or bolted concrete-free
foundation system. In this application the can-
opy contractor welded the base plates directly
to the pile cap.
