ObjectiveThis5dayprogramisdesignedforaspiringseakayakleaders.CandidateswillbeassessedontheirabilitytoorganizeandleadanextendedonedayseakayakprograminClass1waters.SuccessfulcandidateswillbeawardedSKGABCDayGuide/Level1GuidestatusandPaddleCanadaLevel1Skills.

ExpectationsLevelOneGuidesareexpectedtoperformalltheskillsoutlinedbelowwithahighdegreeofproficiencywhileleadinginclass1watersanddemonstratingpersonalcomfortsuitableforclass2waters.⎪ Class1waters:Gentletoursinnonchallenging,protectedwaterswithlimitedwind

effect,littleornocurrent,easylandingsandreadyaccesstolandbasesassistance.⎪ Class2waters:Toursinlightlypopulatedareaswithshortcrossings,moderatepotential

windeffects,gentletomoderatenonturbulentcurrents,easytomoderatelandingsandlightsurfbeaches.

Allsuccessfulcandidateswillclearlydemonstrateeffectivecommunication,leadershipandjudgmentthroughoutallaspectsoftheexaminationandspecificallyduringsituationsrequiringinstruction,scenarios,orriskmanagement.Candidatesshouldtakethescenariosseriouslyastheywillbeevaluatedonhowthoroughlytheyfollowthroughinthesescenariosandlookafterallgroupmembers.

PaddlingSkillsCandidateswilldemonstratearangeofpaddlingskillssuchthattheyareabletomaintainefficientcontroloftheangle,motion,andtiltoftheirkayak.Strokesmustbedemonstratedonbothsides.Strokeswillbeinitiallyassessedincontrolledconditionsthenthroughoutthepracticalevaluationinvariedwaterconditions.

Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Basicstrokes(forward,reverse,stopping,forwardandreversesweepswithandwithoutedging,underwaterrecoverydraw,lowbrace,lowbraceturn,etc.)

⎪ Demonstratessafe&effectivecontrolinmovingwater(eddyturns,ferryglides).

ObjectivesandExpectations

RescueTechniquesAnyoralloftherequiredrescuetechniquesmaybeassessedincontrolledconditions,oratanytimeduringthepracticalevaluationinvariedwaterconditions,andduringleadershipscenarios.

Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Dryandaccessiblestorageofsafetyequipmentthroughoutthepracticalevaluation.⎪ Candidateswilldemonstrate1selfrescuetechnique;

o Selfrescuewithpaddlefloattothepointofsecuringtheskirtandbeginningtopumpoutwaterwithin2minutes;useofstirrupoptional

⎪ Candidateswilldemonstrate3assistedrescuetechniques;o TRescue.o ParallelRescue.o Slingrescue/stirrupreentry.

⎪ Candidateswilldemonstrate1towingortravelassisttechniqueo Techniqueshouldbeappropriatefordifferentdistances,seaconditions,and

situations.

NavigationThecandidatewilluseavarietyofnavigationtoolsincludingnauticalcharts,compass,TideandCurrentTables,andChartOnetoplanaseakayaktrip.

Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Identifysymbolsandscale.⎪ UseChartOneasareferencetool.⎪ Plotappropriaterouteplanswithdistances

andtimeestimates.⎪ Followrouteplansandadapttoconditions.⎪ UseTideandCurrentTablestopredicttidesandcurrents.⎪ Familiaritywithbasiccollisionregulations(re:rightofway).

WeatherThecandidatewilluseavarietyofweatheraidstomakereasonable6to12hourweatherpredictionstobeusedwithinthecontextofaseakayaktrip.

Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Describeweatherphenomenaincludingsmallscalefeatures(landandseabreezes,gapandcornerwinds,fogtypes),

⎪ Observeanddescribecurrentlocalweathertrends(re:cloud,wind,andprecipitation)andtherelevancetotripandrouteplanning,

⎪ Accessthemarineweatherforecastandinterprettherelevancetotripandrouteplanning.

EmergencySignalingandRadioUseThecandidatewilldemonstrateproficiencywithavarietyofcommunicationdevicesappropriatetotheareaoftravel.DeviceswillincludeVHFradioandflares.

Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Routinecommunicationsforlogistics(e.g.usingappropriatelanguage,clarity,brevity,precision,etc.)

⎪ Propercommunicationproceduresforanemergencycall(toCoastGuardRadioordirecttoRCC)

⎪ Careandproperuseofflares(includingtypes,limitations,sequencing,andsafeignition).

⎪ Alternateonewaysignalingoptions(e.g.smokefire,signalmirror,strobe,EPIRB,PLB,etc).

LeadershipandJudgmentThecandidatewilldemonstratestrongleadershipskillsinavarietyofsituationsincludingrescuescenariosandduringthedailyroutinesofpaddlingandorovernightgrouptravel.Thecandidatewilldemonstrategoodjudgmentandpreventativeriskmanagementforgroupsafetybothonandoffthewater.Thecandidatewillcombineavarietyofproblemsolving,rescue,andgroupmanagementtechniquestosuccessfullyresolvestagedscenarios.

Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Communicateeffectivelytoindividualsandgroup,⎪ Detectandcorrecterrorsinclient’sforwardstroketopreventinjuryandimprove

efficiency,⎪ Asserteffectivegroupcontrolonlandandwater,⎪ Awarenessofindividualandgroupneeds,⎪ Leadershipthroughclearcommunicationanddecisionmaking.⎪ Ongoingriskmanagementandassessment;

o Followsgeneralsafetypracticesandproceduresforlanding,launching,andonwatertravel,

o Followsgeneralsafetypracticesandproceduresforonlandgroupmanagement(siteorientation,settingparameters,etc.),

o Problemsolvingforminorissues(equipmentandclients),o Scenariomanagementandresolution(includingpotentialcapsize(s),illnessand

injury,missingclient,equipmentlossordamage).

TripPreparationThecandidatewilldemonstrateanunderstandingofthestagesandimportanceoftrippreparation.Specifically,thecandidatewillperformthefollowingskills:

⎪ Equipmentcheck.

EnvironmentalImpactAwarenessThecandidatewilldemonstrateanawarenessofandexplainthepositiveandnegativeimpactsofcommercialseakayakingincoastalBCcommunitiesandenvironments.Thecandidatewilldemonstrateanawarenessofandexplainthepotentialnegativeimpactbyseakayakersoncoastalandmarineecosystems.

Specifically,thecandidatewilldescribeordemonstratethefollowingskills:

⎪ Guidelinesandstrategiesforminimizinggroupimpactwhiletravelingonthewater(marinelife)andincamp(erosion,waste,vegetation,freshwater,visual,fire,wildlife,etc.).

⎪ Properhumanwastedisposal(guidelines,strategies,concerns).

EvaluationTheevaluationwillcompriseofawrittentest,onwatergeneralpaddlingskillsassessments,andonwaterleadershipassessments.

OurClassroomTheCommunityRoomoftheMcKayMemorialLibrary,17GlasgowSt.,Shelburnewillbeourindoorclassroom,andShelburneHarbourwillbeouronwaterclassroom.Thiscoastlineisvariedandoffersusthediversityweneedtocompleteourtraining.Wewillhavetheopportunitytoexperiencethisbeautifuldiversityaswelearntopaddleinavarietyofseaconditionsincludingstrongcurrentswhilelearningtonavigate,andleadtrips.

AccommodationandMealsParticipantsareresponsiblefortheirownaccommodationsandmeals.Campingwithshowers/servicesisavailableatnearbyTheIslandsProvincialPark.AvarietyofB&B’s,cottages,andmotelsarealsoavailableinthetownofShelburneandCandleboxKayakingishappytomakerecommendationsifanyoneislookingforthattypeofaccommodation.

WhatSKILSandCandleboxareResponsibleforSKILSwillprovidespecializedequipmentsuchasVHFRadios,groupequipment,tarps,andsafetyequipmentsuchasfirstaidkitsandkayakrepairkits.Forpersonalequipment,CandleboxKayakingwillprovidekayaks,kayakinggearandimmersiongear.MembershiptotheSKGABCwillalsobecoveredthroughyourregistrationprogramfee.
