This project created an inventory of options and support for non-Francophone students interested in studying in French at the post-secondary level. Specifically, we sought information on university programs that recruit non-Francophone students to enrol in courses in which French is the language, but not the content of instruction.
Information was collected about faculties, departments and degree programs in which such courses are offered. We also gathered details of academic support for students in these courses, as well as financial support, facilitation of social interaction with Francophones, exchange programs and employment opportunities in French environments, and on-going support for national French-language initiatives through continuing education.
MMEETTHHOODDOOLLOOGGYY:: We referred to the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)’s list of schools in building a contact list for every university and college across Canada. Each school was reached by telephone and email to request information on the programs described above. A questionnaire designed to capture all relevant information was completed for schools offering such programs, and school officials were given the opportunity to confirm all information prior to completion. A modified version of the questionnaire was completed for schools at which the university language is French.
Results:
This report contains profiles of each of the schools for which questionnaires were completed, in addition to a searchable database of offerings at schools. Among the AUCC member institutions outside of Quebec, we have identified and profiled 11 that offer programs of the kind described above. In addition, we have identified seven primarily Francophone universities in Quebec that offer special assistance to Anglophone students.
Most of these schools also offer a range of academic, social and financial supports to non-Francophone students studying in French. These include many services designed
Canadian Parents for French: 2006 Inventory Ipsos-Reid Corporation
5718-02r.doc Page 2
to assist students linguistically in class and with homework, for example, by tutoring in spelling and grammar. A majority of the profiled schools also offer summer and beginner immersion programs for students wishing to study in French. Socially speaking, cultural experiences like film festivals, as well as the provision of public spaces dedicated to French language practice are widespread. Most of the schools included in this report also facilitate exchange programs to French speaking countries or to Quebec, including several that participate in the Explore program. Around half of the schools interviewed make efforts to provide employment opportunities in French environments, often through co-op programs. Finally, the majority of schools in this report offer continuing education opportunities to non-degree students, including non-credit entry to discipline classes taught in French, as well as a range of general and specialized French language classes.

Université de Montréal Assistance for Anglophone Students Studying in French
Linguistic support for Anglophone students studying in French: Yes Anglophone students can upgrade their academic French skills through courses offered by the university’s École de français. They can choose between evening courses, Saturday courses or intensive daytime courses. One of these courses, “Note-taking and Reporting of Information”, is targeted at enabling non-francophone students to improve their note-taking skills. Also, the Centre de Communication Écrite (CCE) currently offers six workshops specifically designed for non-francophones and targets verbal and written problems encountered in French by non-francophone students. The CCE has also developed workshops for non-francophone students who are pursuing their education in a health-related field. These workshops entitled “Intervenir en français dans le domaine de la santé” help students familiarize themselves with the vocabulary and expressions they will encounter in the French-speaking health system. Through the CCE, students can use the resources offered by the Centre d’aide en français (French language help centre) and the linguistic tools available on the Web. The Anglophone Student Support Program offers French conversation workshops to help English-speaking students develop their verbal abilities. Language teachers attending classes to provide feedback to lecturers, advice to students, and to intervene when students are unwilling to ask questions. No

Social Interaction
Opportunities for Anglophone students to improve spoken and informal French: Yes There are two specific kinds of opportunities. The first is the jumelage interlinguistique (language pairings) offered by the Action humanitaire et communautaire, in which English-speaking students wishing to improve their French may be paired with students wishing to improve their English. Students typically meet with their language partners every week. Students wishing to participate have an in-depth interview, which serves to identify their areas of interest and their language level. Cultural and social gatherings are also organized for the language partners. Examples of past events include ski trips, outings to Cabanes à sucre, and a guided tour of Montreal. The second opportunity is offered by the Anglophone Student Support Program and takes the form of conversation workshops. These conversation workshops are intended for students at the intermediate/advanced level in French. They offer students an opportunity to practice their French in a relaxed atmosphere with a facilitator and other students. These workshops aim at increasing students’ confidence in their speaking skills. Internet pen pals. No Social audio or videoconferencing with Francophone students elsewhere. No French language theatre and films. Yes Francophone social clubs or societies that are open to Anglophone students. Yes Links to Francophone social groups outside university campus. No

Other Social or Academic Forms of Assistance
The Anglophone Student Support Program organizes orientation sessions at the beginning of the semester to help students familiarize themselves with their new university. The Program coordinator facilitates students’ access to university resources, advises them on social and personal issues, and refers students to the appropriate services, if necessary. In addition, the Program hosts informal gatherings and organizes an information session in May for newly-admitted students to introduce them to their future university and to alleviate their anxiety about pursuing their studies in French.
