CIET has created five Energy Learning Paths to help professionals chart a path towards achieving their career goals by outlining the body of knowledge and tools they will need to reach them.
Step 1: Choose your career path Step 2: Learn about its connection to energy Step 3: Find workshops to boost your career
Energy Learning Paths
Professionals in Energy
Management are closely involved in
the planning and
monitoring of energy use at an organisational
or facility level. Often technical leads, they are
the drivers of energy
efficiency projects, the authority on reporting
and regulations,
planners of retrofit
projects and managers of renewable energy
projects.
Individuals involved in Energy Consulting and
Modelling are generally
responsible for helping clients conserve energy
and reduce operating
costs by utilising a
variety of tools.
Consultants are often
involved in forecasting
and predicting energy
use, and recommending
EE and retrofit projects
that can bring about savings. Additional
benefits to clients include
setting and meeting energy management GHG
reduction targets.
Those who work in this
sector are responsible for the daily operations
and maintenance of
buildings and their services, which often
include tenant needs
and comfort. They often
have a direct link to energy controls and
settings for buildings, as
well as a mission to run
the building as
efficiently and cost-
effectively as possible, both within a building’s
walls and throughout
the entire building envelope.
Those working for utilities and public
agencies and institutions
are often involved in managing and executing
energy efficiency
projects and reduction incentive programs,
often at a regional or municipal level.
Professionals in these
sectors often work with
a network of
stakeholders and customers on energy
and GHG reduction
policies.
Individuals in this sector
interact with customers
to provide solutions and
proposals, including
costs and payback options that will reduce
energy consumption and
operating costs. They play a key role in acting
as a resource in
educating customers on
energy solutions and
providing them with information on energy
conservation incentive programs from utilities
and public agencies.

Introduction to Measurement and Verification (M&V) This one-day training offered in collaboration with the Efficiency Valuation Organisation (EVO) discusses the principal M&V and IPMVP concepts by underlining the central purpose served by M&V, summarising the possible usages of M&V methods and stressing the need to conduct M&V calculations based on each project’s specific characteristics.
Making the Case for Energy Efficiency Although the benefits and justification of energy efficiency may seem obvious to some of us, this is often not the case for many of our clients and even our colleagues. Being able to articulate and present the many positive attributes of energy efficiency, from operational cost savings to conservation to reduced equipment mainte-nance, is key to selling EE projects.
Drawing from the experience of our expert instructors, as well as from highly relevant material from NRCan’s Dollars to $ense program, CIET has created a 1-day workshop to help you make the case for EE.
ISO 50001: An Energy Management System This highly interactive two-day training course uses the ISO 50001 standard as a model to help the attending organisations implement a structured, adapted and effective energy management system (EMS). Whether your organisation wants to become ISO 50001 certified or not, the guidelines provided by the standard and covered during the course will be highly valuable in helping construct a sound and robust EMS.
Pump Systems Optimisation
This course is product-neutral and provides case studies and actual field data to show the energy savings and kilowatt reduction with a more efficient pumping system. Management can use this course as a valuable tool to introduce better EE practices within their scope and regions. Participants will develop the skills to identify a broad range of system improve-ment opportunities, determine where to focus efforts in their own organisation and develop an action plan with financial justification. Your company or organisation will quickly see a return on the investment in less than a year.
