BUILDING EXCELLENCE AWARDS
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
1994 TO 2014
ANNIVERSARY
2013
A Tradition of Excellence1994 to 2014
In 1994, a Tradition of Excellence was born when the MBA launched the Building Excellence Awards program to recognize the best in construction. The inaugural ceremony in 1994 honored the following projects: Tenser Phipps & Leeper Corporate Offices by TEDCO Construction Corporation, D.T. Watson Rehabilitation Hospital by Landau Building Company, LEGENT Corporation by Mellon Stuart Construction, and AEG Automation System by Mascaro Construction Company.
Over the past two decades, the MBA Building Excellence Awards program has grown to become the highest and most sought-after commercial construction awards in our region. Winning projects are presented a Crystal award to symbolize the ever-lasting relationship of the entire construction team. The Building Excellence Award Crystal is the greatest achievement one can obtain in our region’s commercial construction industry.
Since 1886, the Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania has been renowned for building quality construction projects. Over the years, the Greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area has been built, brick by brick, building after building, by the contractor members of the MBA. Some notable structures built over the years include: the Cathedral of Learning, the William Penn Hotel and the St. Paul Cathedral.
1906 original construction by Thomas Reilly; major renovation by Volpatt Construction - 2008 Building Excellence Award Winner.
St. Joseph Church by Nello Construction - 2010 Building Excellence Award Winner.
Meadowcroft Rockshelter by F.J. Busse - 2008 Building Excellence Award Winner.
Solutions Consulting Headquarters by Mosites Construction - 2000 Building Excellence Award Winner.
Tenser, Phipps & Leeper Corporate Offices by TEDCO Construction Corporation - 1994 Building Excellence Award Winner.
• Project Teamwork - On a construction project, many companies unite for the sole purpose of constructing a building for an Owner - from the Contractors, Architects and Engineers to the Sub and Specialty Contractors to the Suppliers, Distributors and Consultants. The General Contractor is relied upon to orchestrate a collaborative delivery.
PNC Firstside by Dick Corporation - 2001 Building
Excellence Award Winner.
University of Pittsburgh’s Honors College Renovation by Burchick
Construction - 2003 Building Excellence Award Winner. CMU’s Doherty Hall by Jendoco
Construction Corporation - 2010 Building Excellence Award Winner.
The Pittsburgh Zoo Kid’s Kingdom by Landau Building Company - 1996
Building Excellence Award Winner.
• Innovation - Considering that the MBA is renowned locally for introducing innovative techniques and training, like the Building Information Modeling Education Program, it goes without stating that innovation in construction delivery is extremely important in this awards program. Each year a new material or a new application of materials surface in the awards program.
Google Pittsburgh by A. Martini & Company - 2010 Building
Excellence Award Winner.
Submitted projects in the MBA Building Excellence Awards competition are judged by the following criteria:
Over its two decades of existence, the MBA Building Excellence Awards program has had its share of surprising
moments when the winning projects are announced. However, no moment was more shocking than during the 2010 awards ceremony when a tie was announced - the
only tie in the history of the MBA awards program. A Crystal was presented to both the Dick’s Sporting Goods Headquarters by Mascaro Construction and CONSOL
Energy Center by PJ Dick and it was the talk of the industry at The Construction Industry Evening of Excellence.
• Integration of Green Building Practices - As an association that is responsible for ninety percent of the square footage of LEED certified buildings in the region, it is difficult to pick the “green” project of the year when each one has sustainable features so the project is scored based on all of the green features.
• Design & Craftsmanship - Eye appealing finishes in a building can be attributed to the highly skilled craftsmen and women on MBA projects, and more often than not the installation of unique and complex features can be attributed to an integrated design process.
• Client Satisfaction - Within organizations, customer satisfaction has powerful effects and this is no different in the construction industry. During the evaluation process, the awards jury site visits are a reliable measuring process for client satisfaction.
The Woodlands Foundation’s Jewel in the Woods by Massaro
Corporation - 2006 Building Excellence Award Winner.
• Meeting Difficult Challenges - If managing a construction project was easy, everyone would do it. But it is far from easy and unforeseen and unexpected circumstances happen. The MBA contractor averages 41 years in business, and while MBA firms have not seen everything, they know to prepare for challenges and have the expertise to respond when they pop up.

PROJECT: Bethel Park High School
COnTRaCTOR: MaSCaRO COnSTRuCTIOn COMPany, L.P.
“A new public high school construction project by definition presents the entire team
with physical, organizational and financial challenges. The finished complex illustrates how all those challenges were successfully met. Building so close to a functional high
school campus, working with soil conditions and quantities that could have handicapped
the solution, and demolishing existing structures for a new athletics complex were
achieved only to allow the team to complete the project early. This meant moving 1,800
students and 200 faculty in a five day break in the middle of the year. The success
is easily seen on everyone’s face as they use the complex.”

Entry
Entries submitted in the MBA Building Excellence Awards program are judged by a jury
of experienced and respected industry professionals. The five-person jury spend time reviewing and scoring each project submitted, then the highest scoring projects will receive a project visit and an interview with the Owner. In all, it’s a three month journey to find the best projects in the region - projects that are worthy of the awards crystal.

PROJECT: HyATT house Pittsburgh South Side
COnTRaCTOR: RyCOn COnSTRuCTIOn, InC.
“The successful completion of the six-story, 136 unit extended stay hotel, located in
Pittsburgh’s South Side, faced several critical challenges that could have seriously impacted
or even jeopardized the project. The most critical was uncovered when unforeseen
underground conditions consisting of various enormously large metal and concrete
structures impeded auger cast pile placement. The project team devised a plan that enabled
the foundation work to proceed and at the same time benefit the environment. The
innovative utilization of a Post Tension Slab as a critical element in the building’s structural framing, and the application of an Exterior
Panelized System lifted into place utilizing a specialized crane manually operated from the
ground expedited the construction process and added value to the project. Rycon did an outstanding job in incorporating Green
Construction Methods in this LEED Silver Certified Project.”

“An extremely challenging jobsite and an exceptionally constructed signature
building made Robert Morris University’s School of Business project the winner in the new construction under $10 million
category. The project was performed when the campus was fully occupied,
and was located in the back of the campus, wedged into a steep hill, and a historic garden all of which created
many challenges delivering and storing materials. The craftsmanship and attention
to detail of this signature building by PJ Dick was greatly recognized and

“The construction expertise of the PJ Dick construction staff combined with the patient care expertise of Magee-Womens Hospital of
UPMC staff resulted in a successful partnership and team effort. The project involved many
utility connections and shutdowns, therefore, coordination and communication between the team members and with the hospital staff was a critical element to the success of the project.
The proactive planning between PJ Dick staff and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC staff allowed the hospital to continue to
care for patients with minimal impact during construction.”

Collaboration is defined as a way to work jointly with others in an intellectual endeavor. To experience collaboration in action one needs to look no further than
the AIA-MBA Joint Committee. The Joint Committee is comprised of Architects, Contractors, Legal Community and Owners. Currently, the Joint Committee has tasked itself with creating a Collaboration Resource Guide, a publication to drive the industry to very high levels of collaboration and integration through early involvement of all key project participants as an ultimate goal.
For more information on the Joint Committee or the Collaboration Resource Guide, visit www.mbawpa.org/aia-mba.

“The Design Build team executed an extremely difficult and complex project
through creative engineering and excellent construction. Replacement of a
century old, sixteen hundred foot railroad tunnel running through a busy urban park
and commercial area without disturbing the business or traffic presented a nearly
impossible challenge. To make it even more difficult, the train traffic through the tunnel was to run unimpeded and
the project had to be completed within sixteen months. The result is amazing.”
