The Global Health Corps is inspiring organization which places fellows in partner organizations with the goal of leveraging distinct skillsets to improve health outcomes. As an employee of MASS Design Group, I spent a year working on the design of a number of hospitals and health centers. However, the primary focus of my time and effort was the Umubano Primary School for Orphaned Children.
Over the course of the year, I contributed to the DD and CD phases as well as oversaw the entirety of its construction. I was heavily involved in all aspects of the project, from permit drawings to revisions, to site supervision. The Fellowship ended with the Rwandan President, Paul Kigame’s ceremonial inauguration of the school.

The site of the Umubano Primary School was a unique design challange and allowed for a novel organization. A commonly found element in Rwanda’s agricultural landscape are terraced plateaus, We mitigated the steep slope of the site with terraced play areas, outdoor classrooms and grade specifi c buildings. Each level and building is connected by steps and ramps which wind their way through the site, decending to the wetlands and cuminating in a soccer pitch.
The favorable climate of Rwanda allowed the primary design considerations to refocus from envelope tightness to a that of daylight and cross ventilation. Natural and local materials play a primary role in nearly all fi nishes. Hand formed artisnal brick, papyrus ceilings and reed woven doors play warm earth colors against painted concrete and metal.

BAPTIST HEALTH CANCER CENTER
Location: Miami, FLSize: 375,000sfBudget: $400 millionRole: BIM Project CoordinatorPrograms: Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup
This Baptist Health facility is a progressive, comprehensive cancer treatment center. The program includes substantial exam space, a breast center, infusion bays, radiation oncology, and imaging.
I joined the design team in the late SD phase. I began translating the conceptual design sketchup model into each of the the necessary families and components, assigned worksets, and ultimately controlled the exchange of information between our design model and the local architect. At the completion of DD, the model was carefully split into a core and shell, and an interiors model. The completion of the exterior CD package was completed by the local architect with technical and BIM leadership from ZGF. My primary focus shifted to public interiors which included the lobby and the elaborate three story jellyfi sh tank.

1200 17th is a Class A offi ce building blocks from the Whitehouse. I began working on the development of this project during the SD phase where the initial representation of the terracotta paneling was fi rst explored. Numerous studies of the material’s reading on the façade favored a a thinner grid, with terracotta spandrel every other fl oor, with a T-shaped stainless infi ll divider.
Though uniform in appearance, the paneling of the family and the angles of the panels required signifi cant planning when transllating from Sketchup to Revit. I saw the model through the DD phase, fully modeling the scheme and beginning the detailing.

The New Paltz Science Building is a interdisciplinary science building with program as diverse as robotics and geology labs. The exterior underwent numerous design revisons to address condensation potential inside of the vapor barrier. The size of the project allowed for an intimate team and a chance to be involved in most aspects of the project and take ownership over certain elements of the design. I was able to contribute to the design decisions, coordination and detailing of many of the public spaces including the lecture hall.

Max Planck Florida Institute is an neu-roscience research building. I worked on the early schematic design phase modeling early forms and materials and and conducted preliminary shad-ing analysis in Sketchup and and VRay. I was given the opportunity to lead the offi ce’s fi rst forray into Revit as I developed the offi ce’s fi rst Revit model on this project. Though the project evolved substantially, the attitude toward the site, and the material use was informed largely from these inital studies.

Dartmouth Engineering Building
Location: Hanover, NHSize: 130,000sfBudget: feasibilityRole: Concept design, modelingPrograms: Revit, Autocad, 3dsmax
Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering requested proposals for an expansion feasibility study to connect their existing buildings and double the size of the Engineering campus.
The heavily constrained site left discrete opportunities for siting such a substantial addition. From a variety of initial explorations we chose 3 schemes to examine in depth. Each scheme proposed a particular set of constraints, advantages and attitudes toward the campus and its future development.
-Lesser site impact-Good daylight autonomy-Trades benefi ts in HVAC ef-fi ciency for phasing ability
-Best solar heating and shading-Energy effi ciency adequate but potential-ly affected by large skin to volume ratio-HVAC systems are potentially effi cient
-Average daylight autonomy due to large fl oor plate -Good solar heating and shading-HVAC systems are potentially effi cient and straightforward

CORNELL UNIVERSITY REPOSING THE PUBLIC SQUAREM.Arch I THESIS
ACADEMIC
BRANDEN COLLINS BC@BRANDENCOLLINS.COM
This thesis asserts that an understanding of self and place may be deepened by architectural organization. This project serves as a mediation between the history and the present of the Flatbush neighborhood in Brooklyn. It is a refl ection and re-stitching of the public sphere in the urban realm which at one time was ingrained in the bock. It is a celebration and expansion of the public realm expressed through a network of public spaces connected by canopy along the rooftop of of one of its most venerable and permanent and iconic institutions .
By lifting the public realm to the rooftop, the project declares the primacy that should be inherent in publicity. At the same time, the intervention undercuts Erasmus High School’s private courtyard making it a public thoroughfare. Bringing the community to its public gardens, theater, and library, the new public square is conspicuously positioned to be both a catalyst for, and a recipient of renewed commercial activity.

This studio began as an examination of the commonalities between various examples of the “Media Tower”. Essential to the character was a strong identity through form, a base and a tower relationship, retail and offi ce space, and very often, a public engagement by the use of a courtyard or atrium. Without exception, the offi ce occupied the tower and the public engaged only with the base.
St. John’s is an enormous building containing Manhattan’s largest fl oor plates. It naturally lends itself in size and orientation to a groundscraper. With this toppling of a typical offi ce organization, a new type of public interface is required as well. It is proposed that the public sphere might be elevated and a unifying court yard or atrium would provide the interface between the private offi ce and the public itself.
This proposal plugs program into existing shafts and stairs creating a connection between the streetscape and the roofscape. Exhibition space, auditoriums and restaurants punctuate the roofscape below and elevate the public to a position of prospect usually reserved for the tenants alone.
