Body fluids

• 42 liters of fluid in the average adult

• INTRACELLULAR inside of cells

• EXTRACELLULAR outside of cells

• INTERSTITIAL surrounds individual tissue cells

• PLASMA-liquid portion of whole blood

Fluid composition

• INTRACELLULAR-large amount of proteins and a different concentrations of ions

• The total ionic concentrations for the fluids are identical. Must maintain isotonic conditions.

O2 and CO2 transport• The most important

functions of blood• 98% of the oxygen is

transported by hemoglobin in the red blood cells

• Oxyhemoglobin-oxygenated form

• Deoxyhemoglobin-unoxygenated form

• Average person-15 grams of hemoglobin per 100 ml of blood

CO2 tranport:• 25% as a carbaminohemoglobin• 70% as bicarbonate (HCO3

-)• 5% as CO2 dissolved in plasma

Chemical transport to the cells

• dissolved in the water-based plasma. (ions, amino acids, sugars)

• bound to cellurar components. (oxygen, carbon dioxide)

• travel as a suspension –colloid (lipids)

• pass through the capillary wall which acts as a semipermeable membrane

• enter the interstitial fluid• finally pass through the cell wall

Chemical transport to the cells

Acid-base balance

Respiratory control of blood pH

• HYPERVENTILLATION• Increaced rate and depth of breathing

reduces the CO2 in blood, increases pH.

• HYPOVENTILLATION• Reduced rate and depth of breathing

increases CO2 in blood, decreases pH.
