4 Functions:

1. Produce skeletal movement2. Maintain posture and body

position3. Guard the entrances and

exits of the body4. Transport things through

the body – blood and lymph

MUSCLE TERMS

STRIATED – STRIPED IN APPEARANCE

NON-STRIATED – NOT STRIPED IN APPEARANCE

The Muscular System

Three basic muscle types are found in the body

1. Cardiac muscle only in heart Striated (striped) involuntary contracts over a long period

of time

2. Smooth muscle found in organs Non-striated involuntary slow, powerful contractions

3. Skeletal muscle striated voluntary multinucleated quick, powerful

contractions

Anatomy of a Skeletal muscle

•made of specialized cells called muscle fibers that contract quickly and powerfully.

•Each muscle has thousands to millions of muscle fibers bundled together.

•Muscles are attached to bones by tendons (dense regular connective tissue).

•Muscle itself is called the belly.
