Just Doing Her Job?In addition to the demanding
duties of motherhood, our momsworked second jobs ashomemakers, accountants, teachers, scientists, writers, artists, chefs and more. If an award wereto be given for Best Mother Ever, millions of women would berecognized because each motherexcels in her own way.
However, every last one wouldprobably decline the award, saying that she was glad to dowhatever she could to give herchildren the world. The team atour community would like tothank our mothers for their hardwork and devotion. We hope yourMother’s Day holds the happiness(and rest) that you deserve!

On Sound Footing: TheHealth of Your Feet
Your feet are pretty smallconsidering they have to supportthe entire height and weight ofyour body. They can cause bigproblems, so pay some attentionto your feet.
“Feet don’t get any respect,”says Dr. Marian T. Hannan, whostudies foot disorders at theInstitute for Aging Research atHebrew SeniorLife. “They’re sortof the Rodney Dangerfield of thehuman body.”
Each step you take involves aremarkably intricate network ofbones, muscles, tendons andligaments. That complexity—combined with all the weight theycarry accounts for why feet can beso prone to problems, includingbone fractures, arthritis andplantar fasciitis, a swelling of thethick band of tissue that runsalong the bottom of the foot.
If left untreated, foot problemsmay worsen. Eventually, the paincould interfere with your ability todo even the most basic things likewalking up stairs or down thestreet. If pain alters the way youwalk, it can lead to pain in yourknees, hips and back as well. These problems can multiply, limiting your activity and affecting
your quality of life.
Several things can contribute tofoot pain or numbness. Sportsand physical activity can causeyour feet to hurt or becomenumb. Going too far, too fast ornot warming up properly beforeexercise can set you up for painfulor numbing injuries.
Excess weight puts extra stresson your feet. Poorly fitting shoesand other footwear are commoncauses of foot problems as well.
Health problems can also affectthe feet. Lack of feeling in yourfeet could be a sign of a seriousillness, such as diabetes or a nervedisorder. See your health careprovider if you haveunusual numbness in your feet orfoot pain that is severe, comes onsuddenly, or doesn’t improve withsimple measures such as rest orover-the-counter painmedications.
“The good news is that mostfoot disorders are either treatableor modifiable,” Hannan says. “Thefirst thing that you can do isnotice and keep track of it to see ifthere’s a pattern to it.”
Once you figure out whenyou feel pain or numbness, sheexplains, talk to an expert whocan help.
How you walk and moveaffects your feet. Part of that isinherited. “Not only do our feetlook like our parents’ but wealso walk like our parents,”Hannan says. But you canmodify your gait—either withtraining or by changing shoes orusing shoe inserts or pads.
You can help keep your feethealthy by wearing comfortable,well-fitting shoes. Wash yourfeet regularly, wear clean socksand try to rotate your shoes togive them time to air out.
“The more you exercise yourfeet, the better the blood flow isto the feet, and that’s importantfor general foot health,” Hannansays.
Walking is a great way toexercise your feet. You can alsotry specific foot exercises. Sitdown and rotate your ankles inone direction, then the other. Inbare feet, sit in a chair and curlyour toes, then spread them out. This helps stretch and strengthenyour feet to help your balance.
Seeing what someone’s footlooks like is incrediblyinformative, Hannan says. “Ithink we’re going to be seeing alot more health care providerspaying attention to the feet,” shepredicts.
