HYSOLAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF STUTTGARTSTUTTGART, GERmANy 2008-2010

Considered an iportant exaple of

deconstructivist architecture, the Hsolar

Research Institute building was realized

in 1987, at the Universit of Stuttgart

capus in Stuttgart -Vaihingen. The project

was copleted under the leadership of

Professor Günter Behnisch, who, at thattie, directed the practice Behnisch &

Partner together with partners Winfried

Büxel, manfred Sabatke and Erhard

Tränkner. The building originall acco-

odated two institutes – one for solar cell

research, the other for the developent of

cost-effective ethods of separating the

eleents of water. The progra for the

building consisted offices, soe labora-

tories, a storehouse, and ancillar service

roos. A scaffold in front of t he building

carried various solar cells.

The project had to be copleted on a

tight schedule and budget, so there were

advantages in partl using factor-ade

containers for the laborator roo s.

For Behnisch & Partner this was a good

opportunit to explore was of using

prefabricated eleents in an unorthodox

anner, a collage of el eents which

seeed to float in a free, spatial

equilibriu. The ost extravagant foral

gesture is a red steel tube which bursts

fro the ground north of the building and

traverses the hall and projects through theglazed south end. Research institutes are

often quite boring, repressing everthing

special about their function within an

orthogonal, standard, grid-like plan inside

a box. This space, on the other hand, is

eorable, conveing the exciteent of

the trailblazing innovative work that takes

place within.

Unfortunatel, the Hsolar building stood

ept for an ears after the originaltenants, for who the building had been

designed, vacated the propert. In 2006,

the Universit of Stuttgart decided to

coission Günter Behnisch again with a

stud in order to find out how the building

could be restored, renovated and extended

to accoodate the newl established

Institute for Visualisation & Interactive

Sstes (VISUS).

Soe tie after the copletion of the

stud, the planning process for the

renovation and addition to the buildingwas carried out jointl between Behnisch

Architekten and Harder III Stupfl.

Harder III Stupfl were coissioned

with the planning of the extension to the

building, while Stefan Behnisch (Behnisch

Architekten) was coissioned with

the restoration and odernisation of the

original Hsolar building.

Under the architectural leadership of

Stefan Behnisch, the building was restored

in collaboration with Harder III Stupfl

in such a anner that its characteristicappearance and its tpical features

reained exactl as the were, while the

building sstes were updated to eet

toda’s advanced technical standards. Both

the technical equipent and the building

envelope were copletel renewed to

eet the requireents of future genera-

tions of scie ntists. These upgrades were

carried out in such a anner that the

are virtuall iperceptible and do not

adversel affect the unique character ofthe building. In addition, the photovoltaic

plant, which had been reoved in

the past, was also re-installed. It now

contributes to the building’s energ suppl.

The building extension for the Visualisa-

tion Institute created b Harder III Stupfl

was likewise designed in a anner t hat

would ake it unobtrusive and where it

would not copete with the original and

newl renovated Hsolar building. The

annex opened in the suer of 2010.
