BANK OF INDIA STAFF UNION, GOARegistration No. 81.
On 23rd March, 1963 Bank of India Staff Union, Goa made tryst with destiny. A fewvisionary met to create the superstructure of a great organization- Bank of India StaffUnion, Goa. And the successive generations of leadership and membership ensured topreserve and further embellish it.
Soon after the liberalization of Goa from the Portuguese rule that was much longer thanthe British rule in other parts of India, the Indian business community rushed to Goa toexploit the new field. Our bank was the first bank amongst the nationalized bank to open itsfirst branch at Vasco da Gama on 7th March, 1962.
That was the time when Goa was just liberated and the concept of Trade Unionism was stillto sink in the minds of the workers and employees. 23rd March, 1963 is a red letter day forthe employees of Bank of India in Goa as on this day, an humble beginning was made of agreat journey for the employees. A few pioneers of our predecessors in those days gottogether and resolved to form Bank of India Staff Union. The movement led by ourfounding members created ripples not only in Bank of India but also spread to other banksand other industries and sectors in Goa.
A tiny seed sown at Vasco da Gama Branch on 23rd March, 1963 has now grown to abanyan tree giving shelter to bank employees. One can recall nostalgically when the Unionwas formed, fifty years ago; it had the strength of a few members. The journey from thatday onwards is an epoch making one. Looking back, it is indeed extremely satisfying to seethat we have fulfilled those goals set by our founding members in great measures. Overthe period, it has transformed into a strong organization and a vibrant unit of ourFederation of Bank of India Staff Unions, Mumbai and Goa Bank Employees Associationmarching ahead in protecting the interest of the bank employees and in the processprotecting the vital interests of the banking industry.
Since its formation on 23rd March, 1963, the Union has traversed a long path, crossingmany milestones and thereby becoming an organization of repute. We have played apivotal role in maintaining organizational harmony and improving the service conditions ofour members. The success story of our Union is also the success story of the bank
employees’ movement in the Goa State. Today, we are the oldest bank wise trade union inGoa. Our Union has always enjoyed a special place in Bank employees Trade unionmovement… large part of it comes from the initial strong foundation laid by the foundersand thereafter by the contributions of successive generations of leadership and memberswho have built a very strong edifice- on principles of sound policies, prudence andprofessionalism. We have always tried to focus our Union to the vision of our foundingfathers and this helped the Union to grow in strength and strength. Our Union today isstronger, more vibrant and confident. It is bubbling to realise its new defined vision asgiven by our Federation and AIBEA.
