Avonlea School News S E P T E M B E R , 2 0 1 7
I’ve come full circle! I started grade 8 in Avonlea in 1972, graduated in 1976 and imme-diately joined the school staff as the school secretary that fall. When I left in 1980, Lorraine Dombowsky told me that she hoped I would come back one day as a teacher. Well, it’s taken five other schools, thirty-some odd years, and I’m back, right where I started so many years ago. It is my privilege to join this school community; I am very excited! The school is in fan-tastic shape physically; the teachers and staff are competent and energized. Everyone is glow-ing with excitement! In the first few days of school, we have been learning and working hard! As every year, one of our first tasks is to build school goals – the infamous LIP or Learning Improvement Plan! After examining the research, such as academic data and Tell Them for Me data, and considering new Ministry and/or Division initiatives, we determine our directions for the year, build measureable school goals, and consider action plans to meet those goals. We build at least two goals: an academic goal and a cultural goal. This year our school academic goal centres upon writing skills and our cultural goal is to foster Positive Relationships. These plans will unfold over the coming weeks and I look forward to sharing them with you! We are so fortunate in education to have new beginnings. It’s always exciting to start the new school year and foster new relationships! I look forward to meeting you in my new ca-pacity of Principal of Avonlea School.

Cell Phone Guidelines Many of our students have the privilege of having a cell phone or electronic device; indeed, research says 3 of 4 teenagers own one! In an attempt to manage cell phone use in our learning environment, we would like all students and parents to be aware of the following guidelines: The best choice would be cell phones turned off and locked in lockers
during class. We cannot be responsible for lost and/or stolen electron-ics.
Failing that choice, students will be required to place cellphones in a basket at safe location in the classroom. If the teacher-in-charge allows students to use electronics for any purpose he or she will give permis-sion to retrieve the electronics.
If students choose to use their device during class time outside of these guidelines, they run the risk of having the device taken away until the end of the day. If there is a second offense, a device will be taken away until his or her parent to pick it up from the principal.
Of course, cell phones are never allowed in washrooms or locker rooms.
With proper choices and parental support, we are positive we can guide our youth in regards to their digital footprints.

PROVINCIALS ARE COMING TO AVONLEA! The 2017 Senior Boys’ 1A Volleyball Provincials will be host-ed in Rouleau, and co-hosted in Avonlea on November 24 & 25, 2017. While Rouleau School will be the main or-ganizer of this event, it will be a tremendous un-dertaking and a great opportunity to show our school and community pride. There will be many ways for everyone to get involved in helping make the event a wonderful experience for not only our school, but for volleyball players and guests throughout the province.
