SAINT OF THE WEEK:
St ROSE of LIMA
August 23rd
Isabel Flores de Olivia was born to parents of Spanish descent in Lima, Peru. She took Rose as her name when she was confirmed. Because her beauty was so often admired, Rose used to rub her face with
pepper to produce disfiguring blotches. Later, she wore a thick circlet of silver on her head, studded on the inside, like a crown of thorns.
Ten years of struggle against her parents began when they tried to make Rose marry. They refused to let her enter a convent, and out of obedience she continued her life of pen-ance and solitude at home as a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. During the last few years of her life, Rose set up a room in the house where she cared for homeless children, the elderly, and the sick. This was a beginning of social services in Peru. Though secluded in life, she was brought to the attention of Inquisition interrogators, who could only say that she was influenced by grace.
We should remember the greatest thing about Rose: a love of God so ardent that it withstood ridicule, temptation, and lengthy periods of sickness. When she died at 31, the city turned out for her funeral. Prominent men took turns carrying her coffin. She is the first canonized saint of the New World.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time B by Deacon Rob
There is an old saying that you are what you eat. After all, the body draws its nourishment from what we con-
sume. It is not a coincidence that today’s Liturgy of the Word is, once again, over the Bread of Life and its effect
upon those who partake of it. Following the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, whose perfect acceptance of
the Word garnered her the honor of being assumed into Heaven to reign as Queen, today’s Word reveals the only
way we, too, can receive our Heavenly reward. Our spiritual “body” needs nourishment, too. This “food” come
from the Eucharist and the Word. Our Word, today, reveals the means by which Jesus intimately remains with
His People throughout the ages. The propinquity of God through the Eucharist is the mirac-
ulous method by God that accomplishes this. This sacrament is zealously proclaimed by the
Church and has been since the time of Christ.
In Proverbs, Sacred Scripture wisely urges man to possess Wisdom whose house is supported
by seven pil- lars representing perfection. Wisdom invites mankind to leave his foolish ways
and to par- take of her “table”. This reading prefigures the very invitation that Jesus demands
of His fol- lowers – to partake of His Body and Blood. This command by Jesus will perfect
His followers and unite God and Man eternally. Today’s Scripture calls mankind to accept this
miraculous and only way to the Truth and the Divine.
Paul urges the early Christians, and ourselves, to follow the same way of life. In the second reading from the Let-
ter of Paul to the Ephesians, this Apostle to the Gentiles proclaims the need of Christians to reject the ways of
the world. Paul decries the ignorance and debauchery found in the Roman world and incites his followers to
grasp the wisdom of the Spirit and Blood of Christ as they sing the praises of the Lord. It is through the Word
and the Eucharist that their eternal fortune is found and true Wisdom is gained.
In today’s Gospel by John, the importance of the Eucharist is succinctly and emphatically revealed. Jesus is de-
claring to the crowd that he is the true “Bread from Heaven”. This declaration then, and now, is confusing to or-
dinary mortal beings. It is difficult to understand and creates confusion and dissention among his people. They
cannot accept this miracle that their Messiah is offering them. Jesus does not state that this is a metaphor or a
simile; rather, he unequivocally states the reality of this gift in no uncertain terms. He declares that whoever eats
His body and drinks His blood will have eternal life. The Lord continues this revelation and explains that He has
been sent from the Father to perform this great miracle. It is the Divine method by which God through Christ
can remain and walk with His creation. Christ asserts that whoever rejects him will not reap the benefits. It is
this belief that will separate the wise from the fool.
Today’s Liturgy of the Word is a calling to all who wish to garner eternal life. Unlike many Christians who can-
not accept the reality of this sacrament, the Catholic belief aligns itself with the Lord’s declaration. It is the Di-
vine Will that God remains among His creation. In creating the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus, God
feeds and nourishes the spiritual life He has given to all. This Sacrament, the Eucharist, draws all who receives it
into the eternal and living God—the Christ, Jesus.
