DuringHeartMonth,ChrisBrothersinitiatedasocialmediacampaigntogiveawayanAutomaticExternalDefibrillatortoadeservingorganization.AnAEDisadevicethatdeliversanelectricshockthroughthechesttotheheartofapersonsufferingfromacardiacarrest.Theshockcanpotentiallyallowanormalrhythmtoresumefollowingsuddencardiacarrest.

HowimportantareAEDs?JustaskChrisBothers/BontéFoodsemployeesBillWisemanandPaulSivret,they’lltellyou.BothmenexperiencedcardiacarrestinthepastfewyearsandtheirlivesweresavedbyanAEDdevice.BillwhileatahockeyrinkandPaulwhileatworkatBontéFoods.

Theseeventstouchedourhearts.WebelieveAEDsneedtobemoreplentifulandaccessible.Somuchso,wegaveawayanAEDdevicevaluedat$3500plusthenecessarytrainingonhowtousethedevice.

ThedeservingrecipientoftheAEDGiveawayisÉcoleAbbey-LandrySchool,locatedinMemramcookNewBrunswick.PrincipalPierreRoyandstudentswerehappytolearnthattheywillbegettingtheAEDdevice.“Unfortunately,inMarchof2005,atragedyhappenedattheschoolthatstillhauntsstaffmemberstoday.Ayounggrade7student,JanicLeBlanc,collapsedanddiedfromheartfailurewhileatschool.AstaffmembergaveCPRrelentlesslytotrytoreviveheruntilparamedicsarrivedandcontinuedinrotationwiththem.”PrincipalRoycontinues,“Itwasaverydifficultloss,asaresulttheAEDisbeingacceptedinJanic’smemory.”

ÉcoleAbbey-LandrySchoolisanintegralpartofthecommunityinMemramcook.“Weareveryproudtoopentheschooltoourcommunityduringeveningsandweekendsforallsortofactivitieslikesports,arts,culturalandcommunityevents.Sotheschoolisalwaysfilledwithpeople”saysPrincipalRoy.

In2016,BillWisemansufferedaheartattackwhileplayinghockey.Hislifewassavedthankstoquick-thinkinghockeyfriendswhousedanAEDlocatedatthearena.ItwasBill’sexperiencethatinspiredBontéFoodstoinstallanAED.Just18monthslaterPaulSivretsufferedaheartattackwhileatworkanditwasthissamedevicehisco-workersusedtosavehislife.WeencourageallemployersandorganizationstohaveanAEDdeviceattheirfacilities.
