The Accademia Italiana della Cucina was born ‐ naturally at the dinner table, as is often the case with
important things ‐ when a group of friends, united at dinner on the 29th of July of 1953, heard and agreed
with the idea which Orio Vergani had long been nurturing: that of founding an academy with the task of
safeguarding, together with the traditions of Italian cuisine, the culture of the civilisation of the table, lively
and active expression of the entire Nation.

In 1979 the idea of Amici d’Italiagrew out of the desire of a young group of local Italian‐Americans and
Italians to establish an organization that would provide a permanent means of preserving their heritage and
culture. In 1981 Amici d’Italia established itself officially by becoming incorporated as a non‐profit
organization with a mission statement, constitution and by‐laws. These were carefully designed to fulfil a
primary objective: "to preserve and promote the Italian and Italian‐American heritage, culture and history for
the Italian‐ Americans of this community.” The group includes men and women of all ages and people of non‐
Italian descent.

The Northern California Chapter was founded in 1983 and is a non‐profit organization. The goals of our Northern California Chapter are met through the following activities and resources: We organize films and lectures with a Piemontese theme or connection. These frequently take place at the Museo Italo Americano at Fort Mason in San Francisco or occasionally at the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco. We have shown the following films to date: “The Shroud of Turin” (a documentary), “ Riso Amaro” (Bitter Rice) and “I Compagni” (The Organizer) repeatedly and “Le Amiche” (The Girlfriends). In March 2008, sponsored by Regione Piemonte we organized “Cinema Piemonte” a 3 day film festival to celebrate Torino, the first film capital of Italy and we were able to show the fully restored 1914 silent movie “Cabiria” (Giovanni Pastrone), the first blockbuster in the history of cinema. An upcoming firm series: “Piemonte Industria: Industrial Film” sponsored by Regione Piemonte and Archivio Nazionale Cinema d’Impresa” (FIAT, RAI, TELECOM ITALIA, MARTINI&ROSSI) will be shown at The Italian Cultural Institute from February 22 to March 15, 2011. Our lectures have included the following topics: “La Gastronomia Piemontese”, “Gli Scienziati Piemontesi” (Piemontese Men of Science), “ I Francobolli Italiani” ( The Postage Stamps of Italy), “Dolci e Delizie Subalpine” (Confectioneries and Pastries of Torino and Piemonte), “A Brief History of the Alpini Italian Troops”), “Citta’ di Torino and Torino verso il 2011” (The city of Turin and Turin towards 2011), “Benvenuti alla Sacra di San Michele” (Welcome to the San Michele Abbey), “Le terre dei Savoia” (Savoia’s Land), “The Uniqueness of Piemontese Jewry”.

The exhibit “Piemonte Industria – un secolo di lavoro in fotografia” by Niccolo’ Biddau ( Piedmont Industry – photographs of a century of work) sponsored by Regione Piemonte has been held at the Museo Italo Americano from November 4, 2010 through February 6, 2011. An upcoming photo exhibit “The Aesthetics of Technology” by N. Biddau will be at the Italian Cultural Institute from February 16 to March 18, 2011 together with “Piemonte Industria: Industrial Film. Four precious films organized in collaboration with the Regione Piemonte and Archivio Nazionale Cinema d’Impresa: FIAT ( Feb 22), RAI (March 1), TELECOM ITALIA (Mach 8), MARTINI&ROSSI (March 15). We publish a quarterly Boletin in English with sections in Piemontese and Italian. Our Boletin contains sections of history, literature, reminiscences, poetry, culture, gastronomy, websites, gastronomy research, etc. and is edited by Andrew M. Canepa. Our regional language expert, Kevin McCabe, moderates our “Piemontese Study Group” at Casa Fugazi in San Francisco every other week during the Spring, Fall and Winter. A lending library of educational books in Piemontese and about Piemonte is also available to members. We organized educational tours of Piemonte and Liguria in 2004, in Argentina in 2006 and in Piemonte and Trentino Alto Adige in 2010 for our members. Additionally, some of our members attended a Piemontesi nel Mondo International Conference in 2007 and 2009. Our organization recreates the historical festival of “Il Carnevale d’Ivrea” and “Il Palio d’Asti” and “Il Moro di Mondovi’” which date back to the Medieval era. These historical celebrations include the following elements: lectures, visual depictions, recitation of poetry in Piemontese, singing of traditional Piemontese and Italian folk songs, partaking of traditional food, recreation of costumes originally worn to these festivals, as well as a presentation of the cultural and historical significance of these events. We are in the process of producing a video of our stories and experiences of Piemontese immigration and culture for the purpose of preserving these memories for future generations, sharing them with our members and other interested persons and organizations with the final goal of donating the completed video to the Piemontese immigration museum in Frossasco, Piemonte.

The Azzurri Club of Portland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Italian heritage and culture.
The Azzurri Club of Portland promotes Italian culture and traditions by encouraging closer economic, political
and cultural ties with Italy. The Azzurri Club of Portland was founded in the fall of 2004. The club's roots can
be traced back to the (Portland) Azzurri indoor soccer team, which was formed in the year 2000. The players,
all Italian immigrants, noted that there wasn't a club in Portland that represented other Italians of their age
group. From there was born of the idea of the Azzurri Club of Portland. The goal was simple, create a club
that at first would be centered around the team (thus the name Azzurri), and would in time grow to include
cultural events and activities.
Since that time the club has held various events which include an annual picnic, and the soon to be legendary
annual dinner ‐ that acts as a fundraiser for the club. In 2006 they held the first annual Carnevale, geared
toward the children of the families of the Italian community. More recently, plans are in the works to start
an Italian language school.

Sul piano culturale, la prima difesa riguarda la nostra lingua e la relativa promozione in ogni ordine e grado di
scuola: dall'asilo infantile all'Università. E il COM.IT.ES. tra i compiti principali ha proprio quello di
promuovere l'insegnamento dell'italiano, dando parere vincolante all'assegnazione dei finanziamenti
assistenza e cure, a cominciare dagli anziani. Per tutte queste attività, il COM.IT.ES. non deve (nè può per
legge) sostituire le varie organizzazioni esistenti, ma cooperare con esse.

Il Quartiere Italiano (IQI), "the Italian Neighborhood," was founded in 1972 at California State University,
Hayward, as a college club under the guidance of Drssa. Yole Correa‐Zoli, our Italian language professor and
faculty advisor who encouraged us to learn not only the Italian language, but also Italian music, cuisine,
literature, and folk culture, including some folk dances. We dramatized Italian plays on campus and on a San
Francisco Italian TV program, Re di Cuori. Silvana Marsetti, the show's producer, was preparing a series on
the regions of Italy and wondered if our group could learn and perform a few folk dances to introduce the
three segments of the series: northern, central, and southern regions of Italy. Those nine dances were the
beginning of our repertoire.
Our dance troupe began in earnest in 1973 with four couples. By the early 1980s, after members of the
troupe had graduated from the university, we incorporated in the State of California as a non‐profit
educational corporation, recognized also by the Federal Government.
The ensemble concentrates on researching the folk dances and costumes of Italy in order to represent, as
authentically as possible, various Italian regions and cities. The troupe has corresponded and met with folk
troupes currently performing throughout Italy to promote a cultural exchange between the United States and
Italy. Il Quartiere Italiano is also an active member of the Italian Folk Art Federation of America.

The South San Francisco Italian American Citizens Club (IACC) was founded on December 7, 1916, by a group
of Italian immigrants. They founded a political organization as incentive for Italian immigrants to become
citizens and form a united force to protect their civil rights. Today the IACC is no longer a political
organization, but strives to promote and maintain the Italian culture, traditions, and values of its founders.
The IACC also fosters a strong commitment to community service via charitable events and contributions,

It began with the desire of a few men in the Excelsior District in San Francisco to organize a social club that
would be a credit to their community. A club where men could meet and enjoy the benefits of associating
among friends and fellow members. In 1928, in the basement of Mario Blengino's home on Naples St., the
men from the Excelsior District met. Today we have over 200 members.
The founders and organizers of this club, many of whom have passed to the great beyond, would be proud to
see the progress and vitality of their cherished I.A.S.C.
Particularly in a time when the membership of fraternal organizations is declining, we are proud to know that
their efforts and inspiration live on in the I.A.S.C.

Italy’s disastrous PO river flood in the fall of 1951 was the spark that brought the Italian Businessmen’s Club
to life. After a visit to Portland by champion boxer Primo Carnera, local Italian businessmen united in an
emergency relief effort under the leadership of the late A.C. Cecchini (General Chairman of the Italian Flood
Relief Fund). Cecchini, who also owned the Lido restraint, and Carlo J. Sposito formulated the idea of a
permanent organization dedicated to civic service and the preservation and promotion of Italian culture. The
Italian Businessmen’s Club was officially established in January 1952. Recently the I.B.C. has remained
committed to the ideals of cultural awareness and civic service upon which it as founded. Periodic benefits
aid the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Christie School, and The Salvation Army among others. Financial
assistance is also extended through the I.B.C. Scholarship Foundation with financial assistance to students
attending Portland State University. The effort to promote Italian culture is evidenced by frequent quest
speakers and ethnic celebrations such as the Festa Italiana which are sponsored in conjunction with other
local Italian organizations

The Italian Catholic Federation is a California 501C (8), non‐profit, fraternal organization. The structure of the
Italian Catholic Federation follows the common lines of other fraternal non‐profits with one important
exception. The governing body, or Central Council, has independent authority in certain specific matters, but
above all, it serves as a guarantee that no deviation from Catholic principles occur.
The Central Council is made up of 25 volunteer members. Twelve are elected each year by the delegates at
the annual convention and serve a one‐year term. The remaining twelve serve to the mandatory retirement
age of seventy‐five as "Life Members."
The Central Council is governed by the Central Council Statutes, which set forth the procedural,
administrative, and legislative powers to which it is empowered to exercise. Daily administrative operations
are handled by a Bookkeeper, Editor, and Administrative Secretary. The ICF Spiritual Director receives a
stipend for his work among Federation Branches.

The Italian American Civic League was organized in 1934 and became an affiliate of the National Italian‐
American Civic League. Shortly after our inception, we began pursuing our goals, stressing the promotion of
civic, social, education, and economic advancement of Italian‐Americans. We also took a special interest in
maintaining a good relationship between the Italians and the people of the state of Utah, and making sure
that there was a proper part taken by Italian‐Americans in the community. The League's successes remain its
programs. The Scholarship Award Program, began in 1936, continues to be a viable part of our function. In
addition, the organization's many contributions to civic and cultural affairs receive recognition and acclaim.
The sharing of our rich Italian culture has produced a state more diverse in values and tradition. In all of the
League's activities, All State Italian Day at the Lagoon Resort, continues to promote most effectively good
fellowship among Italian‐Americans. And it was, and is, with the annual Lagoon outing that numerous

memories are associated. One Italian recalled, " We all shared everything we had... It was a time of
celebrating; just being together with people who shared the same values, culture, and traditions." This still
remains our mission; to promote our values, culture, and traditions with each other and the state of Utah.

coordinate housing, medical, nutritional and other social services for seniors and adults with disabilities.
While many Bay Area Italians have prospered overall, there are many ‐particularly seniors‐ who rely on the
Agency for service coordination.
Our bilingual staff provides a personalized service not available at government agencies to individuals,
families and the elderly of Italian descent.
Case Workers assist Italian‐Americans by providing them with specific aid in obtaining the services they
require. With this support, clients can avoid the tragic sense of despair that can result from being alone,
especially in time of need.

La Casa Italiana is the only residence at Stanford dedicated to the study and celebration of Italian culture and
language. It opened in the fall of 1976, but the original idea dates back to 1975. After recognizing that there
was support on campus for an Italian language theme house, Annamaria Napolitano (a senior lecturer in the
French and Italian Dept.) brainstormed the details with a group of interested students and Casa was born.
Residents of Casa attend a seminar on Italian culture that includes lectures on history, religion, regional
differences, gender relations, film, music, art, and sport. In addition, there are house outings to the opera
and to Italian restaurants, for example. Residents also perform short plays in Italian for the Stanford
community, and in the spring Casa puts on an Italian‐style fashion show. The house also stages a number of
pizzerias (usually two a quarter) when the kitchen and dining area is transformed into a pizza restaurant for
an evening.
Finishing the entire first‐year Italian series qualifies a potential resident for priority in the house, and as a
result, the majority of the house has a background in the Italian language. This is in evidence at dinner every
Thursday, when Casa has Tavola Italiana. At Tavola, Italian is the only language spoken and lecturers in the
Italian Department often dine with us. A member of the Italian Department lives in the house as a Graduate
Theme Assistant and, in cooperation with one or two student Theme Assistants and the house staff, is
responsible for most of the activities mentioned above.

An antique banner above the altar of St. John the Apostle Oratory (Fishermen's & Seamen's Memorial
Chapel) depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is venerated at the chapel under her title Maria Santissima del
Lume (Most Holy Mary of Light), also known as the Madonna del Lume (Madonna of the Light), the patron
saint of fishermen. In Sicily, some time during the 1700s, when a group of fishermen from the small village of
Ponticello lost their way at sea and prayed to the Madonna to help them find their way home, the
fishermen's prayers were answered when a light suddenly appeared in the sky and guided them safely back
to shore.
Ever since, the Madonna del Lume has been regarded as the patron Saint of fishermen and Sicilians have
gathered every October to pay homage to her and to honor the lives of fishermen who were lost at sea. This
Catholic tradition was brought to San Francisco's North Beach by Sicilian immigrants, who arrived in the Bay
Area in droves, beginning in the mid 1800s. In 1935 the Madonna del Lume Society was organized, and the
first official Madonna del Lume celebration took place in 1936.
On the first Saturday in October, the day before Rosary Sunday, in a ritual practiced since mediæval times,
the words of the Blessing of Ships are intoned over the boats of San Francisco's fishing fleet, as they process
out the Golden Gate. Data dell’aggiornamento: 18 febbraio 2009

The National American Italian American Bar Association is a nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation, founded in
1983 to advance the interests of the Italian‐American legal community and to improve the administration of
justice. NIABA members include judges, law professors, law students, as well as attorneys in both private and
public sectors. A Board of Directors elected by the members governs the association.
National Voice
As a national organization with members throughout the United States, NIABA communicates the views of its
members to federal and state officials on matters of common concern in order to improve the administration
of justice. It also regularly honors those who have made major contributions to the advancement of the law.
Continuing Legal Education
NIABA conducts legal seminars on a wide range of legal topics, covering timely criminal and civil issues
important to lawyers in the private and public sectors.
Student Scholarship Aid
To help defray the high cost of today's legal institutions, NIABA provides educational scholarships to the
winners of its annual law student writing contests.

Working with American and Italian universities, NIABA promotes educational programs in Italy for American
attorneys, as well as an international exchange program for law students in Italy and the United States.
NIABA also hosts exchanges between members of the Italian and American legal systems to foster better
understanding and cooperation on issues that affect both nations.
Publications
NIABA members receive a quarterly NIABA Newsletter to keep abreast of items of interest to the
membership, as well as new legal developments. Members also receive a copy of The Digest, the highly
acclaimed NIABA Law Journal, and the most current Membership Directory.
Judicial Appointments Commission
NIABA has established a Judicial Selection Commission to assist qualified Italo‐American lawyers in receiving
appointments to the Federal and State benches. In pursuing this goal, NIABA works closely with our local
affiliate Italian American Bar Associations.
National Networking
Through NIABA sponsored events, attorneys have the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the
country and to develop invaluable professional relationships. Sponsor members receive a National Directory
listing all fellow NIABA members throughout the United States. This tool is particularly helpful in locating
local co‐counsel.

The National Sicilian American Foundation is a non‐profit international organization, committed to serving
the community and educating the public about Sicilian culture. In 1997, our President, Frank Bonfiglio started
this foundation and has worked very hard to create a place where one can find "Equality and Unity with
Dignity", our foundation motto.
We invite you to share our Sicilian heritage through cultural and social events and exchanges. Personally get
to know us, learn more by attending and participating in our many events, i.e., photo exhibits, speaker
presentations, quarterly newsletter and homemade Italian‐Sicilian dishes.
National and international exchanges with other organizations help us to reach many Americans, with or
without Sicilian heritage, find the social and professional connections to succeed in life.

Since 1991, the Pacific Italian Alliance has been celebrating the Italian heritage, promoting Italian culture, and
partnering with the community, educators and Italian government. The Pacific Italian Alliance seeks to
provide a steady culture and heritage program to our members through close collaboration with the Italian‐
American community groups and other cultural organizations in the central valley and Italy. As members of
the Italian Alliance you are guardians of the Italian culture, a member of our family, and a contributor to the
preservation and advancement of traditions, art, literature, music and history dating back more than two
thousand years. Beyond our past, by being a member of the Italian Alliance, you are providing a bright future

finest schools of Italian language and culture, and with the larger Università degli studi di Perugia (35
thousand plus students). Association Activities:
‐ Local meetings for our membership on a quarterly basis.
‐ Social events that often include a lecture/discussion on a topic of interest.
‐ Tuition scholarships to members for study at the Università per Stranieri (University for Foreigners) in
Perugia.
‐ Annual projects ‐ sometimes people‐to‐people exchanges between our two cities; more recently a beautiful
calendar of the two cities.
‐ Participation in the annual market of Perugia’s sister cities, bringing a taste of Seattle culture and products
to Perugia every spring.
‐ Every 1st and third Sunday afternoon, at Caff è Umbria, our Italian Table: we speak and practice Italian, and

The Lodi Sister City Committee was established in 1961. Although a brief school scrapbook exchange took
place with Lodi, Italy, in 1958 on the occasion of the Italian city’s 800th year, a more active relationship with
Kofu, Japan, began in 1964, when Lodi representatives went to Kofu for
the city’s 75th anniversary. Since then, gifts of Tokay grapevines to Kofu; of a miniature shrine and a granite
marker and cherry trees for Lodi’s Kofu Park; a student art exchange with Lodi, Italy; and visits and letters to
and from both cities have marked over 40 years of the California Lodi’s sister city relationships. The Lodi
Sister City Committee meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Forum, 305 West Pine
Street. Its purpose is to promote the ideals of offering exciting opportunities for involvement in interna tional
relations through exchanges of persons, products, and ideals through cultural, educational, technical,
professional, municipal, youth, and sports activities. Lodi’s sister cities
are Kofu, Japan and Lodi, Italy.

In 1956, Dwight D. Eisenhower gathered a group to discuss new ways to enhance international understanding
and strengthen world peace through citizen diplomacy. The result was the establishment of Sister Cities
International, a non‐profit organization dedicated to the support of world‐wide cultural exchange at local
levels. Today, there are 1,100 American cities that each have numerous sister cities throughout the world.
Since its inception in 1987, Sonoma Sister Cities Association (SSCA) has expanded their mission to further
educational, cultural, social, and charitable objectives, promoting goodwill and international understanding
between the people of the City of Sonoma and those of our foreign Sister Cities Greve in Chianti, Italy (a wine
region similar to our own), Kaniv, Ukraine, and Patzcuaro in the state of Michoacan, Mexico.
Sonoma Sister Cities Association has initiated numerous international programs to promote the exchange of
ideas, freedom of expression, and shared resources. These include numerous student exchanges, Mayoral
exchange visits, professional and cultural exchanges, medical aid programs, and special hosting for foreign
visitors. Nine International Sister Cities awards have been received in SSCA's 10‐years of service. An
additional award was recently bestowed by the League for Historic Preservation for the restoration of the
historic building that is home to Sonoma Sister Cities Association and the Sonoma Ecology Center.

The Italian Cemetery was founded in 1899 by La Società Italiana di Mutua Beneficenza, which is the oldest
continuously existing Italian‐American organization in the United States, established in 1858. In 1978, the
Italian Cemetery became a separate non‐profit organization. Any proceeds from the operation of the
cemetery are directly reinvested into the upkeep of the property and into new construction.
The Italian Cemetery is committed to serving the community by helping Italian‐Americans rediscover their
heritage. Throughout the year, the cemetery hosts classes in Italian language, genealogy, history and culture.
During the spring and summer, the cemetery hosts monthly heritage tours, and an annual festival to
celebrate Il Giorno dei Morti.

UNICO was founded on October 10, 1922 in Waterbury, Connecticut. It was Dr. Vastola's dream to create an
Italian American service organization to engage in charitable works, support higher education, and perform
patriotic deeds. The name UNICO was selected as best representing the nature and the character of this
fledging organization. The name is the Italian word for unique, one of a kind. The founders believed that
UNICO would be the only one of its kind because it placed service to the community before and above
fraternity. At the same time they hoped that the rest of society would come to know and understand the real
contributions of Italian‐Americans to our way of life. Its sole purpose was to unite all Italian Americans and
motivate them to become more civic minded. In order to accomplish this, members would have to
understand that they would have to make sacrifices, not for personal gain, but for service to others. In the
ensuing years UNICO became an acronym that stood for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and
Opportunity. UNICO continues to provide the scholarships and the scholars to elevate the awareness of the
real Italian and Italian‐American contribution to our way of life. It also continues to lead in the battle against
discrimination.
