About Daylighting
Daylighting or Daylight Harvesting is the intentional
utilization of daylight to illuminate rooms and allowing
partial dimming or full shut-off of electrical light sources.
Modern Daylighting consists of skylights, LED lighting and
lighting controls in order to harvest the daylight in a way
that will optimize the efficiencies of electric and natural
lighting through the lighting control system.
In order to utilize the daylight in a room there has be a
digital photosensor installed in the space. The sensor
can be embedded in the fixture or separate. The
photosensor will detect the daylight in the room and
automatically adjusts the artificial lighting to maintain
the pre-determined light level.
ABOUT DAYLIGHTING
Components of a Daylighting System
• Types of Daylight Harvesting:
∙ Toplighting - Daylight entering the space via
skylights, monitors, clerestories, active and
passive light tubes
∙ Sidelighting - Daylight entering the space
from windows and light shelves
• Lighting:
There are many types of lighting used in
a daylighting system. The most popular are
fluorescent or LED luminaires. LED luminaires
have gained in popularity due to their inherent
energy efficiency, long-life and easy of control
relative to other light sources.
• Photosensor for Lighting Controls – there are
three types of lighting controls:
∙ Closed Loop - The photocontrol receives
feedback regarding the amount of natural
light in the room and adjusts the light levels
according to the pre-determined set-point.
∙ Open Loop - The photocontrol is provided
only from external sources, therefore the
light levels are determined; for example,
full-on, 50% dim level or off.
∙ Luminaire Mounted - The photocontrol is
embedded in the luminaire.

About Daylighting About Daylighting
Code Compliance
Daylighting is a great way to conserve energy by
using the natural light from the sun. Daylighting
in a building encompasses the natural light from a
window or skylight. Ashrae 90.1 has incorporated
daylighting into the code requirements.
There are two types of daylighting that are
mandated from the Ashrae code, Toplighting
and Sidelighting; toplighting refers to the use
of skylights in a space and Sidelighting is light
coming from the windows in a space. Each type
of daylighting has code requirements dependent
on the building type and lighting controls. Below
is a quick overview of the code requirements.
ASHRAE 90.1 Codes and Daylighting Requirements for Skylights/Top Lighting
ASHRAE 90.1 -2010 ASHRAE 90.1 -2013 additions or changes
Buildings less than 4 stories
Minimum Skylights fenestration area in enclosed space directly under roof - spaces over 15’ height and 2500 sq.ft. with daylight responsive controls
Spaces over 15 ft. high and 5000 ft² floor space with daylight responsive controls
• Minimum skylight area to daylight area under skylights of 3% with a skylight VT of at least 0.40 • Haze value of >90%
When the total daylight area under skylights and rooftop monitors is more than 900 sq.ft., lamps in area must be separately controlled by at least one multi-level photocontrols with the following:
• Light sensor for the photocontrols shall be remote from where calibration adjustments are made
• Calibration adjustments shall be readily accessible
• Multi-level photocontrol at least 2 steps – between 0 - 35% and 50 - 70%
• Or continuous dimming
Spaces where combined input power for all general lighting with a combined input power of 150W or greater for general lighting completely or partially within the daylight areas under skylights and roof monitors.
• Required characteristics: ∙ Adjustments readily accessible ∙ Lighting in overlapping sidelighted and top lighted areas shall be controlled together ∙ Multi-level set points: OFF/20-40%/50-70%/ON
• Exceptions: ∙ Certain external obstructions ∙ Skylight VT < 0.4 ∙ Spaces in climate zone 8 where general lighting is < 200W

About Daylighting
Daylighting Calculations for Code Compliance
Daylighting is very powerful and saves energy but there is a bit of brain power to achieve. To properly assess whether the
daylighting design is code compliant in a space there are a few calculations necessary. There are two standard methods
for calculating the energy performance for code compliance in a space; Prescriptive and Performance Approach.

Performance - The performance path measures the
performance of the whole building. This path is more
complicated but can result in substantial savings. There
are materials/components in the building envelope that
are much more efficient than required so the performance
of components that do not quite meet the prescriptive
requirements can be offset with the performance of more
efficient materials. This can help save thousands if not tens
of thousands of dollars in construction and material cost.
Prescriptive - The most common approach used is the
prescriptive approach because of the ease of which the
information at component level can be obtained. It is
intended to measure the performance of each component.
For example, a skylight with a U factor of at least 0.70. One
major drawback of this approach for daylighting is that
it does not consider the system wide benefits achieved
through the interaction of the skylights with other parts of
the building design.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
Another important element in Daylighting is the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which measures the amount of heat transferred into
the space through the skylight. The tradeoff is that the most common methods to reduce SGHC also reduce the amount of light
provided by skylight as measured by Visual Transmittance (VT). The loss of light means less energy savings since it will require
the electrical lighting to be on for more hours during the day. Calculations can be done through a program called SkyCalc™ to
optimize the use of skylights with an HVAC system to maximize energy savings.
The ASHRAE code has requirements regarding SHGC when the skylight is not utilized in a daylighting system with lighting
controls. From a design perspective, lighting controls should always be considered to control the use of electric light when free
natural light is available.

About Daylighting About Daylighting
Calculating Daylighting Area Overview
The following is a quick overview of how to calculate a daylight area which is required to understand the controls
requirements for daylight harvesting.
H x 70%
H=20 ft35° 35°
20’ x 70% = 14’
4 ft x 8 ftTop Lighting
Use the smallest out of the following:
• Skylight dimensions + 70% ceiling height
(in each direction) or
• Half the distance to the next skylight
• Distance to any primary side lighted area
• Or the distance to the front face of any obstruction
For example: a 4ft x 8ft skylight would have a daylighting area of 396 ft². (4ft + 14ft)*(8ft + 14ft) = 396 ft². Reference ASHRAE 90.1 Standards for calculating daylighting area. This is required to understand the daylighting harvesting controls for daylighting spaces.

Space (i.e. Local Switch) Control
9.4.1.2
Each space enclosed by ceiling-height partitions shall have at least one readily accessible control device to independently control the general lighting within the space.
Include manual control device(s) in all room control system designs
nLight WallPod devices provide a user with local control of lighting within an nLight controlled space (i.e. nLight zone). WallPods are available in multiple styles — each with varying features and user experience.
Push-Button WallPod Graphic WallPod
Traditional tactile buttons and LED user feedback.
Full color touch screen provides a sophisticated look and feel.
Programmable Timeclock 9.4.1.1a
Interior lighting shall be controlled with a time-of-day schedule control that turns lighting off at specific programmed times. Note: Occupancy sensors or another building control/alarm system that indicate vacancy also comply.
Utilizing controls capable of being networked across an entire building enables simple compliance via a single central programmable time clock.
Individual nLight Control Zones (ie rooms) can be easily networked together across an entire building simply by connecting them into a “backbone” made up of one or more nLight Bridge devices and an nLight Gateway. The Gateway provides programmable time clock functionality for an nLight network as well as interfaces to the SensorView Suite of web-based software applications (via an Ethernet LAN / WAN connection).
Network Gateway
Additional benefits of installing an nLight backbone include remote status monitoring, iOS smartphone app control, and BMS interface capability
Automatic Full-Off via Occupancy Sensor
9.4.1.2b
Lights must be turned off within 30 minutes of vacancy by use of an occupancy sensor or timer switch.
Always include occupancy sensors in all control system designs regardless of lighting type.
nLight occupancy sensors utilize 100% digital passive infrared (PIR) detection, come in several mounting styles, and offer multiple coverage pattern options. Additionally, nLight sensors are available with patented MicrophonicsTM dual technology detection for rooms with obstructions. Configuring for full off vs partial off control is done with system programming.
Automatic Partial-Off via Occupancy Sensor
9.4.1.6gLighting should automatically reduce power by at least 50% within 30 minutes of vacancy.
Always include occupancy sensors in all control system designs.
Reducing the level of dimmable fixtures to 50% is easiest method of compliance, however turning off 50% of lighting via circuit switching is also an option.
360° Occupancy Sensor 120° WideView Corner Sensor
Surface or recessed mounts to ceiling tiles or sheetrock/plaster.
Directly mounts in corner or to ceiling via repositionable ceiling bracket.

ASHRAE 90.1: nLight Applications Guide
APPENDIX B: Requirements Overview
Automatic Receptacle (i.e. Plug Load) Control
8.4.2
50% of all receptacles, including those installed in modular partitions, shall be automatically turned off by a control device.
Since the same automatic shut-off requirements apply to receptacles and lighting, utilizing the same occupancy sensors for both is the simplest method of compliance.
The nLight Plug-Load relay pack is capable of switching an entire 20A receptacle load. Simply add into an nLight Control Zone (room) with an occupancy sensor and the unit will automatically switch off when the room is vacant. Local manual switch control of receptacles is not required and therefore is disabled by default.

Multi-Level /Dimming Controls
9.4.1.2a
Controlled lighting shall have at least one control step between 30% and 70%, in additional to full on and full off. Not required for spaces with one luminaire rated <100 W or for spaces with lighting power allowance of <0.6 W/ft2.
Continuously dimmable LED (or fluorescent) fixtures and manual dimming controls are the easiest method of compliance.
nLight provides multiple options for controlling continuous dimming luminaires. This allows spaces with several lighting types and technologies to be controlled together and with a common user experience.
nLight enabled Acuity Brands Fixtures Dimming Relay Packs / Panels
Acuity offers a wide variety of LED fixtures with factory installed integrated nLight controls that provide smooth continuous dimming, and optional automatic lumen maintenance or manual task tuning.
nLight dimming relay packs / panels enable control of any 0-10VDC dimmable LED (or fluorescent) luminaire. Manual task tuning control can also be used.
Multi-Level Daylight Controls
9.4.1.4,9.4.1.5
The general lighting in primary sidelit areas (250ft2 or larger) or daylight areas under skylights (900ft2 or larger) shall be separately controlled by at least one multilevel photocontrol, which can be continuous dimming.
Automatic daylight harvesting photocells that continuously adjust the level of dimming fixtures according to daylight levels provide the most effective and least distracting control.
nLight offers standalone daylight harvesting sensors as well as occupancy sensors with integrated daylight harvesting. Sensors are available in four different housings and provide continuous dimming control of any/all networked nLight enabled fixtures or dimming relay packs, each capable of being its own daylight zone.
