Dear fellow Rotarians,
Today, there are so many more ways to communicate
than ever before. In the age of video conferences and
instant messages, we can work together from almost
anywhere, and always be in touch; we can share our
Rotary work on Facebook, on Twier, and on
Rotary.org. But there will always be a tremendously
important role for the magazine that you are holding
in your hands – or reading on an electronic device –
right now.
The Rotarian is one of the oldest connuously published magazines in the
world, with an unbroken publicaon history dang back to its first issue,
featuring Paul Harris as a contributor, in 1911. Back then, the magazine was
printed in black and white, and was only a few pages. The type was small,
the pictures were few, and the adversements were for piano dealers,
haberdashers, and a hotel fully equipped with hot and cold running water!
Now, you can read The Rotarian on your phone or tablet, and regional
magazines are published in 24 languages. Seventeen Nobel Prize winners
and 19 Pulitzer Prize winners have wrien for the magazine, including
Mahatma Gandhi, Desmond Tutu, George Bernard Shaw, and Nicholas
Murray Butler. Every month, The Rotarian brings us a snapshot of the best
of the Rotary world: It engages, entertains, enlightens, and inspires.
In an age of constant communicaon, with so many ways to find new
informaon, do we sll need a Rotary magazine? Absolutely. Because the
magazine is now, as it has always been, one of the best ways to spread the
word about Rotary. It has allowed me to share the fun and excitement of
Rotary Days, it showcases the good work of Rotarians around the world,
and it puts a spotlight on important issues affecng us all. The Rotarian isn't
just enjoyable for Rotarians – it's a great way to boost Rotary's public
image, and show the world the work that Rotarians do.
So when you're done reading this issue, pass it along. Ask yourself who
might be parcularly interested in this month's arcles. Give the issue to a
friend, a co-worker, or a colleague. Share it with someone you've invited to
a Rotary club meeng. Visit www.therotarianmagazine.com to share
stories on social media, or send links through email. Use it to Light Up
Rotary – just as Rotarians have been doing for more than 100 years.

Our Magazine has evolved and here to stay
Dear Rotarians,
Being the Magazine Month we at Rotary Peenya have connued the tradion of bringing out our news leer
every month without fail. In fact this year the Secretary of our club Rtn Savitha Suresh has taken the added responsibility of being the Bullen Editor and has come out with flying colours. In fact the content of the news leer has been of very high standards along with providing the informaon of our club acvies. We at Rotary Peenya applaud this effort of Rtn Savitha Suresh
Rotary Peenya is always in the forefront of community service projects but due to The new R.I definion of “Sustainability“ we are finding it difficult to get a global Grant for our flag ship project of The Arficial Limb. The President Elect and I aended The Grant Seminar to sign up for the Grants for the year 2015-16. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the coming Rotary year.

Manasa Smitha is an otherwise 9 year old cheerful girl who is suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. In Muscular Dystrophy, abnormal genes (mutaons) interfere with the producon of proteins needed to form healthy muscles. She is unable to sit and walk and is usually carried by her father.
Rotary Bangalore Peenya helped this girl with a Hip-Knee-Ankle Foot Orthosis and Body Brace which she can wear unl she outgrows this prosthesis and needs a replacement typically every year. She is able to sit and stand and walk with this brace.

Learn what you can do to help fight climate change in your community and at home. Each and every one of us can continue to engage in the movement to help animals, people and nature by taking these eight steps to fight climate change:
1. Sign up for an energy audit for your home. Often these are free from your utility and they'll help you find ways to cut energy use and save money, too!
2. Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Unplug all appliances when you’re not using them, and turn off your computer and monitor when you no longer need them. Contrary to popular belief, turning them on and off will not cause damage.
4. Wash clothes in cold water (especially clothes with vibrant colors). This not only reduces hot water usage, but it is better for your clothing as well.
5. Air dry dishes rather than using the heated drying cycle in the dishwasher.
6. Buy products that have the Energy Star label on them. All Energy Star products meet strict guidelines set by the US Department of Energy.
7. Walk or take public transit to work one day (or more!) per week.
8. Buy renewable energy from your energy provider. Most utilities offer this option, and it is usually not much more expensive than paying for dirty energy.
Earth Hour is a great reminder that by uniting and connecting behind a common purpose we can make a meaningful difference. Not just for one hour, but every day. Thank you for participating in Earth Hour this year. We are honored to have you standing with us in action.
