Home
Our scenic, wooded campus features ample ameni-
ties, tranquil wildlife and historic landmarks. In a
warm country setting, our Washington Home is nes-
tled in the heart of a vibrant metropolitan region, just
a stones’ throw away from our Nation’s Capitol and
the White House. Enjoy our extensive grounds, pri-
vate fishing pond, or even our own 9-hole golf course
while watching wildlife stroll across the fields over-
looking the landmarks of D.C. We have many special
performances and cultural events taking place right
here on campus. And if you wish to venture off cam-
pus, you’re just minutes from the monuments, thea-
ters, and museums. We even plan group trips to
shows at the famous Kennedy Center or art exhibits
at the Smithsonian! Life is fascinating in historic
Washington. All in all, there’s something exciting for
everyone.
Sandy beaches, beautiful sunrises, and a charming
town surround our Gulfport home. This modern and comfortable site is situated on the Mississippi Sound,
a dynamic fishing and leisure spot. Residents enjoy going out to great restaurants, exciting casinos, bou-
tique shops, area golf courses, and more. Often resi-
dents will venture out to nearby tourist destinations like Biloxi, Mobile, or New Orleans. Plus you can al-
ways take advantage of activities only steps from your doorway like surf fishing, beach walks, a dip in
the pool, or even just relaxing on your own private balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

Back in 1811, our young nation made a “Promise” to care for its older and
disabled veterans. This would be repayment for their sacrifices in defending
liberty. At last, two homes were built: the U.S. Naval Asylum (1834) and
the U.S. Military Asylum (1851). The Naval Asylum provided a home for
retired sailors in Philadelphia until 1976 when the home was relocated to
Gulfport, Mississippi. General Winfield Scott, a hero of the Mexican-
American War, provided funding to Congress to open a home in Washing-
ton D.C. for old and infirm soldiers. In 1991 both retirement homes joined
forces and became the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
