political officer of the East
India Company and played a
major part in the pacification
of the turbulent North West
Frontier Province and later in
the Indian Mutiny. For his
role in the latter, he became
something of a hate figure in
India although he did inspire
a religious cult amongst the
tribesmen of the North West
where he was worshipped as
'Nikal Seyn'.
