Situated in the centre of the Cluj-Napoca city, adjacent to the city’s old fortress, the cultural capital of Transilvania, at the convergence of 3 fundamentally different urban fabrics (traditional buildings - city centre, low rise, individual dwelling , south of the site, and socialist intervention - collective dwellings) , yet, each one, specifi c for the city’s structure and urban development, the site is in a close relation to the neighboring cultural and educational buildings and facilities - the mineral part of the city, together with the existing green space of the Central Cemetery (the largest green area in Cluj) , and the planted spaces - the vegetal part.

The lack of a true public space in the heart of the city, conjointly with the need of an new cultural establishment for the Transilvania’s Philharmonie in Cluj, that would play the role of the attractor in the central area, were the starting point for the project design.

CONCERT HALL VOLUME

The site is located on the edge of the old city fortress, the convergence of 3 different urban fabrics, yet each in its own specifi c for the city’s structure and evolution. The concert hall is to be designed for 1600 places, integrating offi ce spaces for Transilvania philhamonie, as well as the public comercial and service spaces for city’s centre.

ACOUSTICS DEFORMATIONS Considering the minimum height required for high quality acoustics standards, together with the urban planning restrictions in the area, the vineyard hall has been choosen as the starting point for the project’s design, giving the audi-ence a brilliant acoustic experience as well as a new aproach on the perception of space as a whole, redifi ning the visual relations

IMMERSION AND INTIMACY

One of the projects design commitments is delivering the audience the powerful intimacy sensation, in order to achive the quality auricu-lar experience. For this specifi c reason, i have choosen to partially immerse the enclosed concrete concert hall volume in the site’s slope, segregating the musical space from the outside world and its commotion, allowing the public to detach themselves from their daily lives and experience a profund musical performance.

SURROUND AND CONNECTION

The philharmonic hall shape, the entraces, as well as its relation with the distinctive urban fabric allows the foayers to hug and surround it, creating new spatially in this otherwise purely functional extension of the hall.By following the site’s slopes, the outer shell that embraces the foayers allows distinctive relations withing the site, as well as the ones with the core of the city, denying the formal approach of the facades.

FRAGMENTATION AND STRUCTURE

Taking into account the main attributes of the imediate urban fabric - the fragmentation and scale, the facades have been divided into smaller structural elements - triangles, minimiz-ing the perceived size of the outer walls. The materiality is based on the program’s weight and importance on the city’s level, as well as the necesities required by acoustics: the cast in place concrete hall, together with the particular mineral characteristics of the city through the old fortifi cations - stone.38

The public space created opens up with a plaza towards the city, in front of one of the oldest high schools, Gheorghe Sincai), linking the old guard route (Str Baba Novac) with the Philharmonic and its surrounding, as well as the Opera Park, although the relation with its wide space is an indirect one.

By taking out of the concert hall structure all the commercial and social areas, and shap-ing them inwards, according to the site’s geometry, together with the displacement and immersing of the main streets pedes-trian areas to a lower ground level, it provides with a secluded space right in the middle of the central city, maintaining a permanent activity on the sites grounds.
